The House Of Samuel Gawith of Kendal founded 1792 when snuff-making machinery was installed in an old water-mill which was the first factory of the firm. There have been a number of changes over the years and I believe that snuff is still being produced in a local warehouse on an industrial estate. Jez would no more about that. However, a recent find of empherma-tins-packets of this firm have been on ebay and I have purchased a few items.
The Singleton & Cole catalogue of 1909 shows S.Gawith & Co, packet tobaccos as "Flycatcher"-"Kendal Shag"-"Road & Rail"- and " -"White Spray. It also shows Gawith Hoggarth & Co packet tobaccos--"Beacon Light" - "Kendal Football Mixture" - "Kendal Fine Cut or Shag". Not sure about the relationship between both companies. They both did snuffs as well. Samples of their "Cob" cigar box, tobacco tins, snuff tins and cigarette pkts are posted.
