Hi, my name is Vicky, although this is my first post I have been a follower of this site for a long time and have probably bought tins off many of you. I was wondering if any of the British tin collectors could help. I recently bought 2 Harvey's tobacco tins-Diamond Jubilee Flake and Torchlight Fake. The Diamond Jubilee I have seen on this site, however I have never seen the Torchlight Fake and am wondering if anyone has any idea of how rare it is and possibly its value. I will try and attach pictures. Any help very much appreciated.

Vicky

It's both rare and valuable I'd say.

Thanks so much for your help Spence. Sorry there is more wood than tins. It is slightly different from Hilbert's in lettering (Harvey's rather than Harvey and Davey) but otherwise identical. Perhaps one is older than the other?

Well that's interesting. I wonder if anybody could date when Harvey and Davy split, or what.

Bacco has previously told us that Harvey and Davy formed in 1762 and they were taken over by Gallahers in 1905

Hello Vicky,

Well, you are a lucky girl.  Are you VickyVictoria in Australia by any chance?

Your Torchlight flake is an exceptionally rare tin, and apart from a couple of scratches, looks in very good condition.  Valuewise I'd say upwards of 500 GBP.

As the Diamond Jubilee is also Harvey's. I think your tin pre-dates mine Hilbert. Thanks Chris. Thanks for your help CDM. Yes that is me. Your right the tin is in very good condition with almost all the gold on the front and base preserved. I do feel very fortunate to have been able to add it to my collection especially now that my hunch about its rarity has been proven. It may however be to valuable to hang on to. Will be in touch with you Alex, if I decide to part with it.

 Hi vicky,

That "Torchlight" tin looks in very good condition. Not sure why some of their brands have just "Harvey's" and others have Harvey & Davey. Can you check to see if any other markings inside tin or on the rims. As hilbert previously stated, the record shows that the firm Harvey & Davy were founded in 1762 and were taken over by Gallagher Ltd in 1905. Can't find any reference to "Torchlight" brand but interestingly, Gallagher brought out a "Torchlight" cigarette brand in plain black & white pkt, in 1907. Have posted advert for the firm 1897  and my two tins which just have Harvey's on but Harvey & Davey inside and on rim.
