Basil Muratti established a tobacco manufacturing business in Constantinople in 1821. The business was transferred to Manchester in 1887 at James St and traded as "Au Bon Fumeur". In 1895, the firm built a large factory at 54, Whitworth St, Manchester which became the centre of an enormous world wide trade employing 500 people all making hand made cigarettes. In 1907, they became a branch of the United Kingdom Tobacco Co, and in 1929, it was taken over by Godfrey Philips. This recent purchase of the "After Dinner" tin (1905-1914) is a follow-up version of there "After Lunch" tin, which was a very popular brand as was "Ariston", "Neb Ka",  and others.

Have you shared that one before Bacco? I have never seen that tin anywhere, ever. Down our way, we'd call it lush.

 Hi Cook Jnr,

No! not shared before as I only purchased it at Elsecar last weekend. Seen plenty of the  "After Lunch" but first I have come across for "After Dinner"  which only had a very short life as withdrawn in 1914. I see your having a stall at Summer National. I am always interested in nice early tobacco/cigarette tins. (t.bacco@btinternet.com)

Hi Bacco. I've seen a couple of those go on ebay. Never in great condition. Odd that they stopped making them while the after lunch, presumably, continued for quite some time.

 Hi Hilbert,

Your right there have been a couple of these on ebay. Not sure why they were dicontinued in 1914 when "After Lunch" brand was still manufactured under licence in early 1930s.

The downfall of the company was mainly due to Mr Muratti insisting all cigarettes should be hand made as he felt they lost flavour machine made. However, all  competitors were now making cigarettes by machine which made Muratti's expensive and they could not compete. Which happened to a few Companies.

Got this nice early Muratti's High Life 25 Cigarettes Tin, specially manufactured for Loeser & Wolff, Berlin.

Glad to see two big different brands joining in this European business "project".

Regards, Mario

 Hi Mario,

That is a bit different. Loeser & Wolf Berlin were very big in the manufacture of cigars and did not give much priority to the manufacture of cigarettes which may be why they had Muratiss to manufacture them under licence.?? Have posted an "After Lunch" 100 tin which are not seen very often.

Grand posting - like to notion of linking containers to advertising….. & never cease to be amazed how folks like Bacco spot the most subtle variants.

Thanks, Bacco, that's quite a grounded idea. Just saw few times your green 100 Cigarettes size variant and I like this really clean shape. Thanks again for showing.

Yes Alan, It is always a pleasure to write about advertising!

Loeser & Wolff cigarettes and smoking tobacco production began in '21, year in which the heirs joined the two branches in an Ltd. society. We can assume a sort of agreement, after the war-time, as you say a licenced manufacture by Muratti.

Here a few of my slight variant of Muratti's tins.

Muratti's Kaiser Wilhelm. Pre-1919 (changing colors of the German flag).

Muratti No 19, No 20, French export...

Muratti's For Ever, German and British variants...

Muratti Bouquet Gold Tipped...

Muratti's Ariston, French, British, different factories...

The well-know After Lunch, with different interior as well...

Muratti's Ariston De Luxe, Gold Tipped...

A nice rounded one on the left that show a different logo and the Piccadilly manufacture...

Hope you enjoied my little Muratti collection,

WIth regards,

Mario
