The Richmond Cavendish Co Ltd of Liverpool was set up in 1861,  as a joint venture between Cope's and Hignett's to handle and exploit overseas sales in sweetened tobaccos  on behalf of both companies and others including John Player's. The firm was liquidated soon after the formation of the ITC. Brands such as "Pioneer" and other trade marks were absorbed by Hignett Bros & Co. In 1930 the Hignett branch merged with the Ogden branch.

This tip-tray is tin and a bit of a rarity and in reasonable condition for it's age. The "Pioneer" brand is mentioned in the 1897 catalogue by Richmond Cavendish. You still see the brand name but on Hignett tins. Has any member come across these before??????

Early tip tray for Globe tea
Lithographed tinplate and glass c 1898.
Atcherley and Dawson began trading in the 1880s and went into liquidation in 1929 despite much success with their acclaimed " Globe Brand " Tea .

 Hi Relics,

That tip tray is nice and in such good condition. The attached showcard is advertising Hignett's "Pioneer" flake sweetened and the next picture shows a close up of the two tins in the showcard with same image as my tip-tray.

I've always liked the finish on that Pioneer tin . Get a good one and it's hard to beat .
In a different way to those earlier beautifully lithographed  pictorial tins of course .

I agree Relics, great looking tin. I had a minty years ago, sold all my tins when we moved houses, Missus said she didn't want the tins coming with us. In retrospect should have kept the tins and told her we didn't want her coming with us.

Yes .. many of us might have felt that way once or twice Gordo .
Might make for an interesting thread " Collectors wives " .
Of course I would have nothing but praise for " 'er indoors" , we've been on some Collecting adventures together .

Interestingly enough, everytime we go to Melbourne, I don't have the option of having a snooze while she goes into Living Legends ?
