long time since ive posted here but here goes....
Yeah you're right about bailey alan.... he has a very good memory for signs and their history. he told me a few 'oh i remember that sign from...' tales today.
i will say that quite a few of the signs that sold today are cheaper to get off ebay, off the top of my head, brooke bonds, colmans plus a few others.
im disappointed that altho the auctioneers are aware that some signs were not genuine originals they did not mention that fact in the listings in the cat or on the net! along with the restoration on a few signs also not being mentioned, off the top of my head... the thorleys, al's? grouping of signs. when they quite clearly know!
i know why they don't.... they want people not to notice and therefore bid higher i.e more £ but thats not very respectable imo.
example being a tin castrol xxl that is obviously not right in the flesh but not easy to tell on the net which sold for £100 which is a BIN sign off ebay costing £9.99
a friend got caught out on a tin sign by only looking at the pic online and when he asked if he could give it back to them to put in there next auction as it not genuine the reply was.... "yeah but its not going to be on the net tho" says it all.
in ref to signs going for silly money, my thinking is this..... signs are cool, signs are becoming more recognised as cool by the average joe, the average joe is not knowledgeable on past prices rarity etc and therefore does not know that its usually a 40-60 sign etc and some common signs go way above what we are familiar with them being priced/sold/valued at!
whats your opinions?
im not all doom ;) a few things slipped thru and i got a few good profit items im just sayin my thoughts. right pub time. :)
