Just trying to sort out a "round the South West pick up trip" to coincide with this sale - so don't be surprised if I appear on the day?

Interesting how we all 'eagle eyed' pick out items whose source we can guess at.... even down to the bulk trays, & more!! The nature of astute collectors, lol!!

Think there's been a quite a few people entering signs in the sale, Alan. Those two signs you've pictured aren't mine.

However, a few of the tray of tins in the sale are mine and I'm not a dealer. Just having to clear my beloved collection, due to circumstances beyond my control

After the sale I may be enamel sign less for my first time since 1985 ! Not a good feelin at all

Believe there may be, but not too sure of details. Best contact the auctioneers on the details

Amended my wording Richie1..... just putting over the point of how as collectors we often say "I know where that was from....." Mark Bailey was quick to nitice something I had down at a recent show - & could recall where it first sold, & to whom. Astute indeed?

I don't think @ our specialist Fairs the term 'dealer' really applies to very many folks.... generally down to folk moving on bits they have taken down etc......

Interesting in BBR's recent Advertising sign how many items were included which adorned my first house in Elsecar way back in the 1970's...... some changing hands several times before coming back.

long time since ive posted here but here goes....

Yeah you're right about bailey alan.... he has a very good memory for signs and their history. he told me a few 'oh i remember that sign from...' tales today.
i will say that quite a few of the signs that sold today are cheaper to get off ebay, off the top of my head, brooke bonds, colmans plus a few others.
im disappointed that altho the auctioneers are aware that some signs were not genuine originals they did not mention that fact in the listings in the cat or on the net! along with the restoration on a few signs also not being mentioned, off the top of my head... the thorleys, al's? grouping of signs. when they quite clearly know!
i know why they don't.... they want people not to notice and therefore bid higher i.e more £ but thats not very respectable imo.
example being a tin castrol xxl that is obviously not right in the flesh but not easy to tell on the net which sold for £100 which is a BIN sign off ebay costing £9.99

a friend got caught out on a tin sign by only looking at the pic online and when he asked if he could give it back to them to put in there next auction as it not genuine the reply was.... "yeah but its not going to be on the net tho" says it all.

in ref to signs going for silly money, my thinking is this..... signs are cool, signs are becoming more recognised as cool by the average joe, the average joe is not knowledgeable on past prices rarity etc and therefore does not know that its usually a 40-60 sign etc and some common signs go way above what we are familiar with them being priced/sold/valued at!

whats your opinions?

im not all doom ;) a few things slipped thru and i got a few good profit items im just sayin my thoughts. right pub time. :)

I bought a Hudson's laundress finger plate from Chippenham's specialty advertising auction years ago. The description was " a couple of small areas of professional restoration" instead of, most of the sign has been repainted. Trick me once, shame on you Chippenham, trick me twice...... there ain't going to be no trick me twice !!
