Seems to be a lot of signs being pulled off walls and barns in my area. There use to be a brookbond tea at an old shop in Eardiston. I drove past it everyday on my way back from work, Then I noticed that it had been stolen and an original poster had been underneath for over 100 years!
Cheers
Al

Interesting Al..ive removed a few signs over the years from their original setting "with permission" before any one asks..Always made me wonder why the same advertisment was underneath either in paper or paint?? |

By the way,,the paper or painted sign underneath the enamel sign was just the same as enamel..No difference |

Yep, same as sign - no idea why. maybe they started off as a new product and after they had sold so much they got a sign? |

Thanks for reply Al and your thoughts..With the paper ones i can understand,,but with the actual painted ones,,well god only knows because they must have taken some effort and time to do.Only to end up at a later stage been coverd in the same advert but in Enamel..Anyway its only a thought as to why.. |

Back in 70z on a hunt for enamels with me old man down in Erdington B/ham we removed off a shop which was then a chip shop a large Red slim Frys cocoa sign..must of been 6ft..The same advert underneath was painted on the brick..Same colour everything..Perhaps we will never know as to why,but very interesting to an avvid collector |

Could it be that that the paper ones were mailed out (or given by hand by a travelling salesman) to the shops, and the shopkeepers were asked to hang it up where they wanted the signs placed, then a labourer would come and actually hang it later once they got the metal ones delivered? Just a thought |

Paper signs were of course not practical given the climateand would have deteriorated very quickly even if coated with a laquer , so not meant for any permanency . I agree with Mick .. Trial run perhaps |

Also possibly the hand painted ones could have been for: - applied in place of signs before enamel became commonplace or - applied during the WW1 years to preserve metal for the war effort? |
