I love the look of the lady.

To my ears "smart as paint" sounded like an insult LOL like a sly way of saying "dumb as a box of rocks" haha actually had to look the phrase up and then it made more sense, apparently coined by the writer RLS and popularized by his book Treasure Island.

The periodical itself seems to truly fit the description of ephemera in that ain't many traces of it left because I couldn't find squat.

I adore old printed papers of that sort and find them fascinating to read and look at with 21st century eyes.

London Mail looked to be very much like Punch, found a copy on offer and saw a few pages --- heavy text smattered with cartoons and many adverts.
