TO CROP OR NOT TO CROP?

 In the middle of compiling the 2 day Bacco Collection auction catalogue. Many of the showcards are framed & behind glass.

Should I crop the frame off, or leave on & provide a bigger image of the actual sign?

Your constructive omments much appreciated. I selected a bit of a lack lustre image for the Q!!

Difficult decision..I like to see the sign outside its frame to check the advert has not been cut down way in the past to back a print...If it is obvious that it has not been cut down ..ie central with a good border or matches dimensionally a known same advert I would leave it in its frame

 forgot to mention..I frame my adverts to show ALL the advert especiall..if it was a string hanging advert that was never intended to be framed

Appreciate that Ken - I'm with you on the fact you should be able to see all of the image….

BUT - most of these are not framed as empathetically as many of us would do nowadays, done some time ago. Many you cannot see the edge of the showcard.

I'm only the seller & can't really take them all out of the frames - hence my Q - to show with frame on (not part of the image really) or just crop to show the sign itself bigger in the catalogue?

Often the frame is important to the overall look of the piece, we have all seen frames which are cheap or just plain nasty which you wouldn't want on your wall. So I would say display the item with the frame in the catalogue as many people may be buying off the internet and so will not be seeing the whole story. Also you wouldn't want to be taking each piece apart to photograph, it would take you weeks!

Defo Batley - taking them out to photograph is both an impossible task AND not really something we should undertake as momentary 'caretakers' (just in case there's any 'issues' behind).

Trouble is when stuff goes postally we generally take OUT of the frame to pack - broken glass in front of a showcard, in transit, usually equals a completely ruined/ scratched to death piece?

Heads down on the catalogue - quite a mammoth task - for 2 days of sales.

Catalogue should go to printers on Monday 27th February - posted out a week later.

Hi Alan, I've been a keen showcard collector for more years than I care to remember and will still buy top cards for 3 or even 4 figure sums.
Unless a showcard is still with it's original frame I wouldn't even consider bidding unless I can see the item out of it's frame and that all sides are untrimmed. It's not usually too difficult to judge if a frame's original, they virtually all have holes in the top rail where screw-eyes were inserted for hanging purposes.
The amount of cut down signs that have been used for backing is considerable and it makes it just too risky when serious money is involved.
I don't know the quality of Bacco's showcards but perhaps for anything outstanding it might be worth a photo showing that the item is actually all there ???
