This  American Line tin with picture S/S Friesland ,which was built on the Clyde in 1899 for the Red Star line by J & G Thompson. Built as a four mast vessel and considered to be one of the safest vessels afloat at time of launching. Her maiden voyage was Antwerp to New York which continued for next ten or more years. In 1903, She was chartered by the American Line with first vayage Liverpool to Philadephia were she continued for next 7 to 8 years. These cigarettes were supplied by the firm Ariel Gray of Liverpool who also supplied many other shipping companies. In 1911, the new Italian owners renamed her La Plata and in 1912 she was scrapped. Not come across this one before, so a bit of a rarity.

Hello Bacco, Is it yours, or someone elses?  I remember seeing it on ebay a while ago.

 Hi Relics & CDM,

I like the tip tray. Have you identified the name of the ship?? Alan, I purchased the tin about 6 weeks ago. This other picture shown is SS.Haverford owned by the American Line and have owned it for a few years. Did a write up on this tin in April 2016. Check archives for mor info. Page 18 .

 Hello Bacco,

Thanks for  the reply.  I was going to bid on it myself. But long Covid has shot my memory, and I forgot all about it. Anyway, well done, it's an interesting tin.
