HI, i'm new to the forum. Great place to chat about our hobby and share great signs! I live in South Africa and collect mostly petrol, oil & tyre related enamel signs.

I recently acquired this Shell sign and thought i would share it with you. I think it is absolutely fantastic!  Some damage but it does nothing to detract from the beauty of this sign. Nine seperate colours have been used on it.  Never seen another one like it.

Sorry about the glare from the camera flash in the photo!  Cheers.

Hi Enamelsigns72, and welcome to the forum!

Thanks for posting the picture of your Shell sign. Very interesting, and not one I've ever seen before! Do you know where it was made? Perhaps in SA for the local market?

Don't know if there are other collectors on here from SA, but perhaps we can look forward to seeing some other local gems from you?

Cheers.

Hi and thank you for the nice comments,

The sign was manufactured by "The Union Enamel Co Ltd Durban".  This was an early enamel sign company in South Africa.  I guess this sign was made in the 1930's given the style of the car in the picture and it has an "art deco" feel to it.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that the sign measures 800 x 1200 mm.

Here are some other Shell Oil signs in my collection.  Will post more pictures on other subjects from my collection if you would like to see?

This one has more damage than the other but thankfully the important parts are not too bad.  This sign measures 500 x 1020 mm.

Here's another - measures 970 x 970 mm, in great condition.  Really heavy enamel!

Hope you like. Cheers.

Just realised i maybe should have quoted the sizes in inches:

First sign in earlier post = 31 x 47 in
Second sign above = 20 x 40 in
Third sign above = 38 x 38 in

Cheers

Hi All...................here are some more signs from my collection to continue with the Shell theme.  Hope you enjoy.

The sign above is 36 x 60 in

This sign measures 12 x 20 in and in the lower corner reads "The Property of the British Imperial Oil Co of South Africa Ltd".

Sorry about the quality of this pic.  Cut it from a larger photo of my collection taken at a distance.  This one measures 15 x 24 in and is a double sided flange sign.

Last couple for today!

Great sign.  Bullet holes add some character!!  Someone must have been trigger happy many many years ago. Oh well........This one was made by the Vitreous Enamel Company of Cape Town a long time ago.

Sorry about the very modern Coca Cola tin sign poking into the bottom corner! This Shell sign measures 48 x 61 in, so is quite big and really heavy enamel.

Now, when i got this sign i was extremely dissapointed to see what i thought was the bottom of the sign havng been cut off.  Well i had never seen another and grabbed it anyway.  I was very happy with a visit last week to a collector of signs in SA.  From behind another rather large Tea sign he pulled out a Shell sign and it was exactly the same as the one above (just much more damage).  It even looked the same at the bottom of the sign........as though it hade been trimmed off.  However, we have since decided that for whatever raeson this is how they were, and the damage along the bottom of my sign is due in large part to the extra holes that have been mercilessly drilled or punched into it at some stage in its life.

Hope you find the signs interesting and it is my pleasure to share some SA Shell heritage with you.

Well done enamelsigns72! Thanks for adding further images. That last one is very different from any Shell sign I've seen before, but I freely admit that I'm no expert on motoring related stuff! I was wondering if you find any UK-made signs turning up in SA? And are there many collectors there? I look forward to seeing further posts from you, with other enamel subjects! Good luck!
