A nice example of early American advertising. I am guessing circa 1890-1900. The figure on the left is Lady Liberty holding the US Constitution in her hand and on the right is Plenty with her horn.

Here's a couple of advertisements for this tobacco. They feature illustrations from the Darktown Chronicles. These were from the Currier & Ives company and were produced from the mid 1870's to the mid 1890's

The first one has the caption, Darktown tourists going off on their blubber. "Nuffin but poor weak cullud pussuns".

This next one is captioned: Uncle Rastus Patent Potato Digger, "You fool niggah, don't you know nuf to keep way from a patent".

I'm not certain what these cartoons had to do with the actual product being advertised but the Darktown Comics were very popular during their time. Offensive? Yes, but they are a part of history and the Americans weren't the only ones using this imagery.

The side of a building in Savannah, Georgia with the fading remnants of a painted sign for this tobacco.
