What are the holes for on this "Army Club" ash-tray? I thought that it may be for standing lit cigarettes in while "The Major" has another swig of his whisky. However, I have put cigarettes in and they are very wobbly or maybe it was a novelty feature. Anyone have other ideas????

The D.Papadopoulo Bro's ash-tray, I purchased recently at a Bottle-Fair which was my first time at one and was very impressed with the quality of items and the amount of people there. The guy I bought it off said he had dug it up with a load of bottles/jars etc on a Victorian tip in Staffordshire and claimed it had been buried for alomost 100 yrs. I don't know about that but I was impressed with the retained quality of the imagery which is why I am showing it.

Hey Bacco

I think I know what the holes are for. If you take a lit cigarette and put the burning end in the hole it will extinguish itself due to lack of oxygen. I once had a pocket version that looked like the small square chalk used on pool cues except there was a hole in it. They are called snuffers.

I looked them up on the internet and mostly found small pocket versions but I did find a couple of ashtray versions. The blue glass one had the hole in the middle and the chamber pot version had a womans behind sticking up. It is hard to see but (no pun intended) there is a strategicaly placed hole where you could stick your cigarette.

Hi Vlad,

You are probably right about them being snuffers. Do like your bottoms-up snuffer.
