Hignett Bro's were a Liverpool based family firm who started manufacturing tobacco about mid-1850s. They also had a factory in London. They were one of the 13 firms which amalgamated in 1901 to form "The Imperial Tobacco Company (of Great Britain and Ireland), Ltd. This S.D.V brand was introduced around 1910. The S.D.V stands for "Sun Dried Virginia" as opposed to drying tobacco leaves in tobacco curing barns. The tin sign is dated 1915/16. Both box and sign are in reasonable condition. Anyone else have other items of this particular brand???

Hi slim_shardy,
Welcome to the site. Can you post a picture of your match holder and see if there are any other identifying marks. A lot of advertising match-holders-strikers were stoneware with advertising logo's around them. Many made by the Doulton factory and others. Your picture or further details will help.
SDV enamel ... cig
Hi Slim_Shady,
Your match-holder is also a striker and would often be found on a pub-bar or on a Tobacco-Shop counter. I would say that it is Edwardian 1901. There are a lot for sale on ebay from £20 upwards. Would be of interest to a Hignets Tobacco collector.
Like your Hignett SDV enamel Ciggysigns. It is great condition.
