Thought this advertising bike might be of interest. It was made by Humber Cycles and sold as an advertising ' vechile ' Believe it or not in about 1895 it was ridden from Plymouth to Folkestone and unsurprisingly caused quite a stir along the way

And just imagine in those days that the roads that were surfaced would have been cobbles or setts. Many outside the towns would not have anything else than loose stones / sand & dust. I see the actual event version had a supplementary rider at ground level to keep it steady, with good reason !!
