Thought this a bit unusual purchased at Newark as a Papier Mache but I think it is Bakelite. Dealer said it came from Home Counties. Does anyone recognise the retailer??Not sure if it was given out as a advertising piece or for good customers??

Bacco,
No way that's Bakelite. It's definitely papier-mâché and early probably 1850-60, so pre the first printed tobacco tins.
I've seen them before - not easy to find...

Hi Jez,

Thanks for that info and confirms my first impressions when picked up. I just had my doubts as first I have come across.

English for sure. Had an early paper pack from them. Box could be "Japanese laquered wood" technique. Seems to have chipped like that. Here's an ad from them & their address.

M & R Peacock, 542 Kingsland Road, Middlesex, Tobacco Manufacturers. Registered 1 January 1880

Here is another box for "JAMES" Celebrated SNUFF picked up at the NEC and very similar to the previous posted.

It is in very tidy condition for it's age

Has any one come across this company??
