 Hi,

Its my first time on this forum, and I know nothing about tobacco jars. I believe what i have are 2 old "shop" jars , one american, one Uk. The lids , I think are quite rare, and although not a pair, I bought them together in an old antique shop. The lids, and base are metal, the main body is clay/eartenware . Ive added the phone for perseptive. Id love to know more about them, and this looks like the place- fingers crossed!

Can anyone tell me anything about them???

Hi SB

Welcome to the forum, I'm afraid they may be relatively modern, .........but many on here will know so wait around for a few more opinions

 Hi Lummox,

Thanks for the welcome, This does look like the place to get expert opinion alright!.

Can I ask if you have seen this type before, or what makes you think the are relaatively modern ?  ( Please know, Im not disagreeing , I just would like to learn more, and know what to look out for!).  The brass lids, I have, ( maybe in error) cleaned up myself- I did this a good while ago, before I knew better. they did look to have some age to them.

Like I say, any information about them, or opinion very welcome- thanks for looking, and if you can tell me anything, Id appriciate it!

Cheers

Hi SB

Firstly I'm sure the lids ( yes ) would have been better left. The labels just don't look right, are they paper labels stuck on ? They just look so clean as does the pottery.
Usually how ever well things have been kept they show age these to me do not.

Another interesting point is you say one UK the other USA but they are exactly the same , suggesting someone may have put labels on jars ?

Cheers lummox

 Hi Lummox,

Thanks for taking the time to help me.

Im no expert, but Im pretty sure these are not paper labels stuck on. Im sure they are painted onto the clay.

I have attached 2  better photographs , for you to have a look at.

The reason I think one is from the US , is the "John Weisert" tobacco company is from there, ( according to Goggle anyhow).

They are in good nick, Ill grant you, but if you look at the 2 new images, you will see some chipping and flacking , especially on the "Best Shagg" on.

Your the first person whos really seen them, or taken an interest in them, so thanks again for your help!

 Hi SB,

Welcome to the forum. Lummox is right, they appear to be American, quite modern and I think just used as advertising jars for the particular brands of tobacco, identified on the label. The shape of the lids does not make them practical for serving loose tobacco from. I have posted some British Storage Jars and you can see they have flat lids some with finialsand are well worn with years of constant use. Some lids are missing and one replaced with cork.

(All these are in the Bacco auction at BBR on 1st/2nd April)

 Thanks Bacco,

I had hoped they might be the same as these guys I saw online- but maybe with the original lids, or something. The Graphics on the Best Shag one is very similar to the Black shag on these ones, so I was putting two and two together.

You dont think these could be the same things?

Hi sb

I've gone and had a good look at those on their web page and to be honest they are not very good and frankly fairly dubious in origin. Certainly nowhere near there £360 asking price !!

After a while you just get a feel for things, Why ? how ? most times you just know ? Being straight with you, yours just ' look wrong ' sorry

That said the only way to learn is to handle, buy and get an actual feel for items. We all started somewhere and often learn't as we went along  !! If you like em and they did'nt cost you an arm and a leg thats really all that matters !!

Cheers lummox
