Can anybody recommend what the best things to do in London would be? I'm planning on a maybe a trip in the spring. I'd sure love to haul an enamel back with me on the airlplane, but can't sepnd my whole trip looking as the wife woudl kill me. Are there any good antique advertsing shops? What about just general tourist stuff? Whats the best pub to have a beer that isn't too touristy?

London isn't the best place to buy anymore, but you could try Alfie's Antique Market off the Edgware Road on Church St, or Portobello Road on the Saturday.
As to drinking I'd avoid all the places in the west end as they're very touristy. However the John Snow is a very British pub off carnaby st in Soho. It's on Broadwick St, it's a Samuel Smith pub so food and drink cheaper than elsewhere. Take a fat wallet - London very expensive.

Loads of museums etc Mick, but you will have a better chance of buying at some of the bigger fairs Kempton, Ardingly, Peterborough etc. Better to attend a couple of bottle shows where decent dealers like Steve Burton, our own Jesmond, Stuart Cardno, Madwon etc etc have a good range of signs and advertising. To me London is over rated, dirty , poor transport, noisy etc............but I'm just a poor country boy ! That said you should definitely go to Robert Opies museum in Notting Hill and take your wife to Compton Chapel near Guildford its a hidden gem, amazing !!

Cheers Lummox

Thanks guys. I figured London was the logical choice for first visit, although I have heard the pricing issue come up with other people I know that have visited. The problem with me renting a car is I don't think i will figure out how to drive on the wrong side of the road! I'll probably end up crashing into someone or something, plus i have seen nightmarish country roads that look only wide enough for one car!! Its just asking for trouble to go driving....Bloody hell!!

You can totally do London on a budget and I still think it's one of the best cities in the world.
It's common sense stuff, eat in the touristy places and it's gonna be expensive, but that's the same of Paris, Rome, New York etc
Hampton Courts worth a visit, Notting Hill, Covent Garden, five dials etc. Camden Town market for good food from all over the globe

Balls to London Mick, all that watered down headless beer at £5+ a pint, full of Chinese tourists, hiring a car just to join a car park queue all day long. Sorry guys but its dirty, busy, noisy and £££££ -  get you and the missus off the 'plane straight out of the Heathrow terminal onto the Piccadilly Line to Kings Cross and catch a high speed train to York, lots of history, good cheap northern beer from great local breweries, Plenty of enamel signs in the Castle Museum and National Railway Museum (free to get in). Betty's Tea Rooms not to be missed. We do airbnb for £34 a night for both of you inc. breakfast, car hire just next to the train station and you will probably get it beyond 3rd gear + Two National Parks within 1 hour's drive ++ Mrs Tykes home-made scones and cakes to tuck into and yours truly & Jezmond will give you the best spots to pick up a sign for your own collection. PS Elsecar only 50 minute drive away if you want to tie it in with a bottle show AND go visit your gunslinging mate enamels1000 Joe over in Bridington, again 50 minute drive max. and the best cup of tea waiting for you wherever you go with a good Yorkshire welcome while you drool over signs in our kitchen. Tempted????

Have to agree with Steve.
I've lived in London all my life and - sorry to say it - it's become a total hell hole.

Haha, you guys! Wouldn't it be me and Spence trading insults though!

Anyway, for this trip, its going to be short and dedicated to the London stuff that I need to cross off my bucket list...but on future trips, I'm going to try renting a car and getting around the "real" England, so for future trips it would be great fun. By the way, what is it with these pork pies you all talk about, what are they a meat pie? What is the big deal with them?

C'mon Mick surely even you 'dumbass ' Canadians know that ' Pork Pies ' is just aa English joke meaning that people who eat them are ....Pigs !

Traditional northen ' Pork Pies ' are usually actually filled with a Leek and Cheese filling, Sounds horrible but they are in fact lovely !!

Cheers lummox
