There is a sale at Tooveys on 24 March which includes an interesting enamel or two. But more interesting than the sign itself is the buyer's commission, now 29.4% (incl VAT). PLUS, if you bid online, the additional charge is 5% (plus VAT) i.e. 6%, making a total of 35.4%. I though there must be an error so I rang Tooveys to confirm and they told me that The Saleroom addition is still 3% (+ VAT) but they have decided to increase it by 2% as there is "extra work involved"! |

Thanks for that, saved me doing the maths. I had just spotted this myself, and seen your topic before querying it myself. I will be emailing them shortly to express my dismay. It does not do their vendors any favours either as bids will be lower as a consequence. I wont be bidding at all, even though they are within striking distance. |

Seems like auction houses are getting greedier and greedier. Adding in the seller's commission, it must be close to 50% of the hammer price! If this becomes the norm, there is a danger they will kill the golden goose! |

As the " Pompous Tw*t " Ruprt Toovey often says when he's on the Rostrum ................................" FAIR WARNING " !! Just Greed and a massive con for buyers and sellers alike Sells for £100 buyer pays around £135 Seller gets say£75 after commision, insurance, lotting fee, photo fee etc might EVEN be less ? So out of an actual price SOLD of £100 ...............£60 has gone walkabout .......................WOW !! |

Auctioneers are nothing more than Rag and Bone men in pin-stripe suits. The commission fees are a joke. I will never sell my collection through a traditional auctioneer. What do they actually do ? fred Kite |

Couldn't agree more thats why sales like Simon Turner's Railwayana one and many smaller ones are doing welll. You don't need a posh building and loads of useless staff anymore.

Have to agree Simon Turner is a gent !! Helped me out a few years ago with an honest appraisal of some Railway signs I had. Gave me a price 2.5 times greater than another dodgy Railway actioneer !! .....................strangely based in Dorking ! |

Funnily enough, I put a collection of railway items in one auction in Sheffield and despite a clock going for £800 I actually ended up owing the auctioneer money! |

We have always hopefully looked after our Customers and our Buyers premium is still only 12% inc Vat. We like to think GWRA has always offered good Value and advice, we send out a few thousand fully illustrated catalogues free of charge per year , just work out the postage costs on that at £1.20 a copy ! We try to keep costs down our end by investing in technology rather than staff. If and when I have to put our BP up it wont be like the others at a flat rate, a 3 tiered system will be implemented but not Yet ! |

I will be increasing our Saleroom charge to 4% + Vat as from our July auction, this will mean buyers who bid online with us pay 16.8% inc Vat. The Saleroom.com have just hit me with a 40% increase ! and its take it or leave it they are very Bullish !
Personally I dont make any money from listing our sales on the saleroom.com as we still have a healthy audience turnout of around 400 on auction days. However I feel for my area of business its a must going forward.
Tooveys are correct re the extra work its quite painful trying to download all the winning bidders from there site as its geared up for using there own in house auctioneering software GAP Office not 3rd parties as most auction houses use. |

I can see that using the Saleroom might add some work for auctioneers but without the internet most items would never reach the audience they do. This is especially true of the occasional enamel sign included amongst a lot of general collectables in local auctions, as is often the case. Without the internet, most collectors would not be aware of these and the prices achieved would be far lower. Auctioneers obviously benefit in the cut they take, and when the buyer's commision gets to 20 or 25% plus VAT, I would have thought they do not need to add a further online premium on top of what the Saleroom charges. |
