Hi, Has anyone else noticed the growing trend on Ebay of old cupboards/ cabinets etc

being passed off as original advertising  ones from Victorian/ Edwardian shops

with fake lettering (Frys, Cadburys, Pears Soap, etc) that were put on yesterday !!

to highlight my point see Cadburys Mirror on Ebay being sold by "elmgarden (1703) "

asking price £4000, (gulp),  I asked him if the lettering had been added at a later date

surprise, surprise i have not received an answer.  (see what other shite he is selling)

I dont claim to be an expert, so i would be interested in any comments.

Yours in collecting.

Keith

Yes, been going on for a long while now, referred to it in a previous thread. They have spread out from Elmgarden to quite a few other dealers now. There is no reference to the signwriting being original, so that keeps them on the right side of the line. But the reference to the furnitures origin as original is correct, and so the rest is implied but not stated. Dont think a true collector is going to be taken in, too much of it around, and clearly by the same hand. They should really call it a decorative piece. One other note, they do their homework. My partners surname is J Young and she grew up in Brixton. A year or so ago, they knocked out two pieces in the name J.Young, Brixton, eel pies etc. If you Google it, it will come up, and even pics. can be found. To the novice this could easily be mistaken for provenance. Im afraid the line between antique dealers and decorators is becoming blurred, and intentionally so by some.

I remember the Eel Pies sign. Didn't they show it through the Antiques Atlas website?

Yes, some on Atlas now, and Sellingantiques, and as I noted some of them have been taken on by other dealers.

Looks like they are now crossing the line....take a look at the Cadbury over mantle mirror that they have reserved at £3750.....they are stating that it was probably commissioned for a department store and that the lettering is original and probably dates to the early 20th century....this is now blatant deception...considering that they probably have their own sign writer and probably commission the items themselves..

Oh I found it on the private web site " Elmgarden " ...what a piece of shite !! Cadbury advertising is totally out of date with the mirror. Looks like the Ebay listing is just a " feeder " to their website. if you peruse there feedback they have SOLD 1 item on ebay in the last SIX MONTHS !! Surprise Surprise !

As an Aside its a " Victorian Mirror " yet CDM did'nt launch until 1905 ...hmmm ! with a poor style mid 1930's choc bar and price

Does anyone know the person perpetrating the SH*TE?

We all saw the harm the fake Guinness stuff did, makes folks wary, and, like the dodgy enamels, it DOES find genuine collectors out every now and then!!

I did send them an email, detailing the fact and reasons why it was totally wrong and probably fraudulent . Wonder ( hopefully ) if they got cold feet ?
