Marcus's introduced this "Very Rich" brand of cigarettes to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. The firm ran it's business from 53, Dickinson St, Manchester. It was taken over by Kinnear Ltd, of 57, Park Lane, Liverpool, in 1897. They retained the brand name, Later traded as the West End Cigarette Factory Manchester and Seven Spears Tobacco Factory, Henry St, Liverpool. Popular brands include "Handicap", "Marcus's", "Outrider", "Emu", "Floral" and "After the Ball". They were eventually taken over by Cope Bro's of Liverpool. Does anyone have samples of these brands to show????

The advert is from Tobacco World 1897.

Great tin Bacco. Haven't seen any of those brands.

Handicap is a very strange brand name. Did it perhaps have a sporting/racing theme?

 Hi Hilbert,

A good questionand after further research, I found that Kinnears which grew out  of Marcus's, was widely referred to in the area as the Cricket Cigarette Firm. This no doubt was due to the two famous Lancashire cricketers, W B Stoddart, who was Managing Director of Kinnears and G L Jessups who had a seat on the board. This was probably why all the cigarette cards were sport related and most of there packets and tins. Handicap was one of their best sellers.

 Hi trixon telestar,

Love your Marcus's cigarette cabinet and has some brand names I have not come across before. Does it have a pediment for the top. (If you ever want to sell it I would be interested). Thanks for posting.

Hi Bacco. The cabinet never had a pediment as there is a raised wooden moulding on top and is therefore not flat so you would not be able to sit one there. As the cabinet bears my christian name six times I think it unlikely I would ever be able to replace it ,so it's not for sale ,sorry.

Curious question Ross, I'm intrigued. Players Drumhead , no. But are you alluding to the words "Trixon and Telstar" ? Very few people I'm guessing would know the connection with them.Maybe you're one of them ?
