Well spotted Banjo Boy! I hadn't noticed the differences in the 5 Boy despite looking at them quite closely. I now need to see if I can work out whether the "Makers to HRH Prince of Wales" or "Makers to HM Queen Alexandra" means a different date and which is the earlier. Anyone have any thoughts?

Queen Alexandra was the earlier - she died in 1925 and Edward HRH Prince of Wales didn't take the hot seat until 1936 (and gave it up the same year) - I think !!!

Makers to the PRINCE OF WALES is probably Earlier !!...... Edward VII became King in 1901on the death of Victoria his mother and was crowned in 1902 the year I think 5 boys started.  Although they could be virtually the same date. Edward had been the Prince of Wales so long due to Victorias reign that he was often still called that even when King

Edward reigned 1901 - 1910 , His coronation was not until later in 1902. so it might well be the Edward sign was made in early 1902 before his coronation as King

I think Craig is thinking of the later version " Maker to Mrs Simpson " !

cheers lummox

Well Ross, you are correct that Queen Alexandra died 1925, so that that version would have to be 1910 to 1925 - when she was 'Queen Mother', I guess. However, throughout this same period, and up to 1936, Edward was Prince of Wales. So the version mentioning him could be anywhere between 1910 and 1936 (although not sure when they stopped making this style sign). So maybe Fry's produced both at the same time? Or maybe they only produced the Prince of Wales version after Alexandra died.

Hi Deegee

Once Edward VII died she would NOT be known as the Queen ! Mary was the Queen, it would be a direct insult to the Monarchy and just would not happen because of the constitution. If so it would have been maker to the Queen Mother. I still think new product new sign circa 1901 / 02. Still a good debate !

cheers lummox

You could be right - I'm not that up on royal etiquette. HOWEVER, to the left it says "Maker to TM King & Queen"(This must be Edward VII and Alexandra - couldn't be Victoria as there was no king then). So, given the "Queen" here is Alexandra why mention her again on the right in the separate dedication? Makes no sense to me. I am inclined to think that Alexandra was still referred to as 'Queen Alexandra' as a sign of respect after the death of Edward VII during George V's reign.
