I don't do enamels but I think it's interesting too.
In defense of Mick et al. red is the first colour to go, although it would often tend to matt at the same time, not necessarily.
What no one has mentioned is the likelyhood of a life preserver in the 1880's ever being anything but red on white. They make yellow ones now but they are pure yellow and very bright. Yellow on white just doesn't work.
Can anyone find an example of such from that era?
The colours on the one from the book are clearly all wrong but it is odd that there is no red there either.
