Well, what did everyone make of this Bovril enamel sign then?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....K:MEWAX:IT

The sign was accurately repro'd by Garnier, but was this one right or not? The back looks distinctly odd! I thought the final result was quite cheap if an original, although the central ding was more than a little unfortunate!

Although no expert on this sign, the back looks original to me. As for the 5 boys, watching this one as i've heard so much about it. £1,500?

Evening sign seeker,

I’m inclined to say that it was the 1970s Garnier repo. Your right about the back, it was decidedly dodgy. Another good indication that’s it’s a repo are the screw hole, they’re to far into the sign, original enamels the holes are much closer to the edge.

The Bovril was definately reproduction, somebody has been duped out of £230. The 5 Boys has been touted about, but I don't think it will reach the price that was being asked, although the images are superb in my opinion, just a shame about the crease

Hi Steve

Are we talking of the 5 boys on ebay ? I don't see a crease mentioned ?

Small one at the top centre. Has taken a bit out of the enamel locally but it runs down into the top line of script from memory

Just to let everyone know, the buyer of this sign rang me up and said that it was manufactured using silk screened auto paint and baked on to look like enamel. The back had been swashed and acid treated. The holes were freshly drilled through steel plate. this sign should have a makers mark bottom right.

Cheers

Al.

Just to update everyone on the Bovril saga.

Still trying to get my money back, but no response from seller.

Unfortunately the address provided through ebay is not on the Royal Mail database.

When I made enquiries before purchase, he sent a link to your site.

I compared the two and could not find a difference in images.

When I compared in the flesh, the main difference was in the end of the tail- apart from the finish as you previously described.

As soon as Alex Brown got his money I haven't heard a peep.

If anyone sees the item around, please let me know.
