A bit dramatic there Factory Boy....the reality is that these tins still turn up and have to start  off somewhere...fresh finds generally start with the clearance boys and the less informed market traders...its just a question of who stumbles across the stall first...so the guys that stick at it week in week out throughout all weather doing the non stop leg work are the guys who win...and all credit to them...and it could be anywhere....I can tell you that house clearances in this country have in no way dried up...and I know most go to auction..and the quantity of the rare sleepy finds are less than before...but the fresh quality stuff is still out there with unfortunately just about everyone now having a rough idea of what it is worth...its the old addage...youve got to be in it to win it !.....if it turns up at auction its a bun fight against the world...so fairs and markets it is....its a jungle out there !

I'm pretty sure Ross bought that cracking Huddart Parker recently at a fair and at a great price. I've got no doubt good stuff shows up at these places, just not enough and not often enough for me. I used to go to every swapmeet here in South Australia, over the last couple of years I have dropped right off, too much effort for no return, plus I like my sleep in after slaving all week at work. Occasionally you hear someone found a rare bargain, BUT !! you still have to be at that right place at that exact right time or you miss out ?

You need to be in it to win it but it’s getting harder and harder ... ebays far too competitive these days... internet’s made all aware of values etc ... I go to an antique market every week in London in my lunch hour and have done for the past 10 years, I enjoy talking to the stallholders / collectors and might see the same stuff week in week out but then something eventually turns up even if it’s just a “nice interesting thing” without huge value which gives me a buzz. Picked up an embossed amber cucumber mineral bottle in bottom of box with other bits .. £10... but u do have to be there in the first place to find it. Cig .

I agree Ciggy, it's all about the chase, you can't beat that feeling of finding a sign half buried, or blocking a hole in an old shed. Going back 25 years ago, I would go for a drive out into the country and search through some small country towns and I would always come home with signs. Back then you would still see signs in situ, today I could drive for a week and not see anything that was a lead to a sign. With Australia being as vast as it is, large distances between towns, it makes it an even harder proposition. During my last holidays I went for a couple of long drives in different directions, after spending a lot of money on diesel returned with Jack diddly squat !! This is why I have lost my motivation over the years, this is why I do admire the persistence of some of the guys on the site that put in the hours. I do get the feeling that there is probably a lot more stuff around still in the UK than Downunder.

Holidays start next week, see if I can get motivated ??

I get the chance to go through stuff put aside at the local re-cycling centres in Nottingham to sell on my stalls at the big shows. I have not seen a decent tin down there in many years. The reason is that the tip owners are now withdrawing the best bits for themselves and putting them on ebay!!! They have become too knowlegable about the value of tins due to the internet. As have house clearance guys who can simply check out values on their mobile phones... its so easy! In general these days you mainly have to buy from established dealers or on the internet. There is so little fresh stuff coming to market through other sources anymore.

Another super tin FB.

You've been on here longer than me I think. Have you shown your collection before?

Keep going.

 Hi FB,

That "Windlass" is nice circa: 1890-1910. Your collection of tins are superb and in great condition. Is that ebay number right as I can't find it.
