ALL VERY CONFUSING..when you inspect it inch by inch it shows considerable age and wear .If not original somebody went to an awful lot of trouble to paint it and give it over a 110 years of aging (i.e. worn/faded colours in the image). With the handles and ceramic inner ( sealed inside) it must have started off as a very old blank tea urn !!... 1920s images of tea urns I have looked at are just stainless steel plain functional urns ..not looking like this..It came from a reputable auction house and was dated as 1910 another auction house I showed it to said it was genuine and four full time antique dealer friends inspected it and declared it was all original,,The only bit that worried me is one of the taps does not go through to the inside yet looks as if it has been there forever..there would have been no point in adding this brass tap What would an Edwardian Lyons tea urn have looked like ? ..The image is of steam rising from the cup she is holding |

Ken...the urn is genuine but the repaint is totally wrong...colour palette wrong for the period..it would never have Lyons Tea House on..just Lyons or Lyons Tea..also..these hot water dispensers were generally on counter or bar to be dispensed to the server behind so any pictorial contect would be on opposite side facing the customer...not on tap side...once painted its very easy to age an item back..trust me on that one 😊...a lot of this stuff was done post 70s..this one by someone who had seen too many Alphonse Mucha illustrations..still very decorative though..best..Ed |

Another two penneth worth, Most were called Lyons Tea Rooms, Corner House or Ltd etc ... Not Lyons Tea House. Nearly all Lyons advertising of the eaty years was LYONS' ( apostrophe ) . Don't ever remember seeing any advertising for LYONS TEA HOUSE apart I think from one mirror which also mentioned Corner House cheers lummox |

Thanks Lummox..I did see this image and inspect it, there is a similarity ..taps stick out further here.and there are other differences.I felt this was more 1920-30s.I need a period expert to date your picture. If it isdefinitely Edwardian then mine is made up and I am a sad individual who along with auction houses and dealers have been caught out...its only money |

100% wrong. The fake makeover looks to me to date from the 1980s when the Irish pub/decorator theme hit its dizzy heights. Some great stuff was going through Relics and Andy Thornton's at that time but it also created the desire for fakes which even back then were fooling buyers and sellers alike. The big tea canisters were wanted back then and it didn't take long for them to be faked along with mirrors. Everything became fair game for painting up. Thornton's even began making their own fake advertising mirrors. The lettering on the urn lid looks to be copied from the Lyon's coffee and tea enamels of the 1930s. This would have looked good in a fake Irish pub back in the 80s. Beware that there are still people lettering up fake drawers and cabinets and selling them at the big shows... and people are still buying them thinking that they are real! Most auction houses don't know much about old advertising, others just turn a blind eye to fakes. FB |

I agree , its difficult a) because we all don't want to upset fellow collectors . b) we have all done it ( bought mistakes ) - WELL I HAVE ANYWAY !! - and c) none of us like being wrong or making a mistake . BUT Sorry " just look at it " its so wrong and thats without any investigation etc lummox |
