Miranders dream..a ladies cigarette tin with six cigarettes with colourful tips..The Hignetts had twelve gold tipped cigarettes with "DAMES" printed on each edge of the tin. From this can I safely assume that it is also a ladies cigarette tin ?

I think you're on safe ground with that assumption Ken. I can't see some burly bloke in a flat cap swinging a pick-axe, smoking a Golden Butterfly, can you? LOL.He'd be having a Woodbine for sure.

 Hi Kennett,

Like Trixton Telestar, I agree with your assumption that the Hignett "Dames" is a ladies cigarette. Have come across many "Butterfly" tins and packets but yours is first one seen with "Dames" printed on the side. The "Butterfly" brand was introduced in 1900. Have posted a couple of my tins.

Miranda Ltd, based at 4, Cock Hill, Bishopsgate St, London. EC 2, introduced Miranda's Dream in 1920 to 1930 with a number of variants but aimed at the upper-class female markets. A 1922 advert shows them as suppliers to "Sandringham" and "Marlborough House". The Company  included coupons in their tins which enabled buyers to purchase a copy of  "Miranda's Lucky Dream Book" with 12 coupons and is described as a delightful present for every lady who could share those dreams.

Hi Ken. Here's the sign to go with it. It won't fit in your cabinet though , it's 4 FT x 3FT.

thanks bacco ..Its nice to see advertising on the site other than enamels.. as good as they are..I have only two advertising mirrors .Four others went when I moved house as did four nice Edwardian tobacco adverts (when I ran short of money)

Information you give on tins I have is printed off and put inside the relevant tin , though I lost the Sandy Hook info you gave a few years ago

 Hi Ken,

"Sandy Hook" is a Lighthouse based on the barrier spit on the coast of New Jersey, USA and historically, had been a convenient anchorage for ships before proceeding into Upper New York Harbour, with immigrants and then to load up with tobacco and other goods . It is no longer used as a Lighthouse and has a preservation order on it. John Sinclair, tobacco manufactures established in 1856 at Bath Lane, Newcastle on Tyne, named the brand of cigarettes "Sandy Hook" in 1895 and was withdrawn in 1932. You do not see many of these tins. Hope that helps!

 Hi Ken,

I like your "Pinnace" tin and was not aware that the image was same both side which makes it quite rare. Have posted mine which has the image only on front. I have also posted pictures of W.Ariel Gray & Co factory based in Everton Rd, Liverpool which manufactured cigarettes for many of the shipping lines including White Star. The first photo shows all the delivery vans lined up outside factory and the other is a staff photo. This firm existed until the 1960s more wholesale than manufacturing.

(can someone turn photo's please)
