Hi Lummox,
Not something I have noticed before but a speculative answer may well have affected tins manufactured during the Amercan Duke's purchase of Ogden's in the late summer of 1901. The "Redbreast" brand was introduced in 1895 and was one of Ogden's most popular brands and maybe Duke was hoping to add his own logo now that he owned the company.
However, the amalgamation of British Manufactures to form the ITC (Imperial Tobacco Company) to resist a hostile invasion by Duke resulting in buying back of Ogden's and preventing the Americans takeover of Bristish Tobacco Companies. It is just a thought.
Posted some of my "Redbreast" tins which show the 2oz without the logo but with name on top.
