Hello,

As some of you may know I was lucky enough to clear out the Kendal Brown House last year and found a few bits relating to Samuel Gawith of Kendal. I have attached a few images of some of the items I found, and also some other bits that I have collected since to do with the three Kendal makers.

Would love to hear from anybody who has other Gawith/Gawith Hoggarth/Illngworth Items that I dont have or anyone that has any items for sale!!!

Thanks

Chris

Wonderful collection... love that 'Future King' ciggy pack. Not seen it before. John Peel must be rare too. The Navy Cut tins are also very nice.

Here is a few better images of the cigarette packets labels. I must admit the Future King was one of my favourite finds!

 Hi oldthings1981,

Super assortment of items from the Gawiths company. Can't find registration for that "Future King" & "John Peel" packets. Nice early items. I did buy an assortment of items when they were up for sale. Picture posted. The only item I can't see in your collection, is my "Beacon Light" tin posted.

 Hello Bacco,

Yep the bits you have came from the Brown House when I was clearing it out. I have seen the Beaon Light tin before thanks, just need to find one for myself now!

 Hello,

A few more images of some of the earlier bits for anyone interested... Whilst the McStay labels are not Gawith or Kendal related, they were obviously produced and packaged by Samuel Gawith and then shipped to McStays...

Flabbergasting jawdropper!

An outstanding assembly which literally dropped my jaw to the floor.

Like a museum.

I only have a couple of small oddments from them - 1923 billhead, beermat, and a pre-war export label unused for 16oz round tin of Grouse-Moor.

But I have a great and deep love of the company and currently holding about 30 pounds of their product in my tobacco cellar, of which this very moment I'm smoking a bowlfull of my fave blend by them: Lakeland Dark.

The mighty House of Gawith is the last man standing of the peerless UK tobacco industry.

JF Germain is still going too, but they're over on Jersey in the Channel Islands.

I gathered some little bits of info and put them together, including notes on the short-lived era of John E. Gawith,
it'd be too difficult to reproduce here so I'll offer a link:

https://www.pipesmokersdens.com/threads/the-house-of-gawith-an-interesting-historical-footnote.6341/

What caught my eye amongst your amazing collection is the big unopened foil wrapped Kendal Twist,
but also what appears to be the flavor essence bottles...

...could you please take some pictures of them?

I'm intensely curious about them.

The Kendal makers are rightly world famous for their use of essential oils and such, indeed, today if you ask a knowledgeable pipesmoker about Lakeland tobacco they will know that it is a scented type, often floral, but also musky.

Seriously overwhelmed really with what to ask or comment on at the moment as it is such a tremendous range of grand stuff.

 Hi oldthings1981,

Here are another couple of  Samuel Gawith tobacco tins , "Grouse Moor" mixture and "Road & Rail" tobacco. Not in the best of condition. Both from Broadie collection. There is another "Road & Rail" tin under favourite tobacco tins from Andy Burns collection.

Feel free to ask away and I will try and answer.

We have a lot of history in the archives and old filings and records, as well as stuff still in the factory and indeed still in use today in the manufacturing.

We are also collecting more for a small museum we will be opening shortly in the old factory.

 Hello Oldthings,

I hope you don't mind me asking, but have you got a spare of one of those White Spray packets?  If so, I'm interested in buying it.  You can contact me at a-p-chappell@myoldtins.plus.com

Very many thanks.
