Worth every penny. You can't beat signs in super condition, even better if they are near MINT and, of course totally un-restored. Love looking at signs in that condition

At that price it's rust bucket enamels for me then... hey ho...

Here is another Cadbury's design that I've never seen before. What age do you think this one is?

I’d say about 1931 on that one.

Isn't  37 it's catalogue number ?  I'd put that sign slightly earlier ,say 1920 approx . When they have the tree motif on , i've been told they are of that sort of vintage .Arkwrights might be able to tell us , he's the go-to man for dates.I'm sure i've seen a white and blue version of that red sign , as well .

I struggle with dating Cadbury's signs.

Yes, it would be useful to know if the Tree motif can be used as an age indicator.

E.g. Tree Motif = 1920s -1930s??

Staying with the dating topic, what do the very, very early Cadburys signs look like? Is the Cadburys font style used on the sign a good indicator of age?

Learning all the time

Cheers

L to R . Tree motif , "no 57" , 24 x 12     RHS. This is the property of Cadbury ,Bournville ,Eng. . This sign is earlier than others shown I believe.

Do you know if companies like Cadburys had any kind of Branding Governance back in the early days?

Today fonts, pantone colours and logo usage are strictly policed and protected by companies.

It would be interesting to know if similar protection existed between Cadburys and the sign manufacturers or did the sign manufactures have more or less complete carte blanche to make a sign as they wished – as long as Cadburys liked it. When you consider how many different design versions of the Cadburys ‘C’ and font styles you get on signs, you begin to think maybe so.

Or it could just be that Cadburys management kept changing their brand imaging every 5 minutes? Probably something in the Cadburys archives on this. Now, if there was a catalogue of font styles (and ‘C’s) documented with dates, that would be useful.

Hi PhoneGuy , I'm in awe of your devotion to the minutia of early sign-making , but I wor  ry it's taking the pleasure out of your hobby. There's lots of things we don't know about how and why things were done when signs were first designed and produced ,but isn't that part of the charm of collecting them ? For myself , there's just three rules ,if you like. One  ,do i like what i'm looking at ? Two , can i afford it ? Three, Have I got room on the wall for it ? If so then just buy it . Don't make an easy job hard . Take home and enjoy .

LOL, Yea I know Trixon, I can’t help it, I’m a detailest – maybe I need to change my handle to ‘Enamel Geek’. Inquisitive and tenacious have been used to describe me – what a combo!

However, one thing I have learned is, “if you like it, then freakin grab it”! Worry about where its going to hang later on.

And totally agree – Enjoy!
