We've talked a little about this before, But what are opinions about the actual reason for the numbers on backs of signs ?

I always thought they were something to do with the date, but in the past, others have believed they were batch numbers. This one being 118, could it mean mean Jan 1918?

Early Chromo signs would have the month/last two digits of the year of manufacture on the front. An example is a Sunlight Soap sign that I have has 1/97 on the front.

Who knows though

Well .............." same " Sign and same number , So I reckon Banjo could well be right. They get an order ....its order no118 .  So they stick an order or batch number on the back of all the signs

As an aside ( re Jimbo ) this although not that clear has lots of small bit of green on the back although None at all on the actual sign

Or possibly they could be the catalogue numbers. I’ve got a Sunlight Soap sign by Chromo Wolverhampton somewhere and the number painted on the back matches the number it’s listed under in the Chromo catalogue.

That's the most plausible explanation I've heard to date ,Hinks. I've sometimes thought it might have been an employees works number or reference .
