.... now that Ive identified it, 99% anyway. This came out of a farmyard in Barnham some while ago, I purchased it because its enamel, and originating from Worthing myself I immediately recognised the road name. However, not being a 'bottle' person it has taken some time to sort out where it must have come from. Its battered as you can see, but I suppose it could be a last surviving remnant. Ivy Arch Road is still an industrial area, alongside the railway very close to Worthing station. The Ivy Arch is still there, and in use as an underpass of the railway, see pic. The opposite end of the tunnel is the Station Road area. Shelveys Mineral Waters based in Brighton had a number of satellite plants, one of which was in Staion Road, Worthing, circa 1900. If this sign was on the western end of their building, then the pointy hand would be correct. There was no other business, ie brewery, dairy etc. in that area that would warrant such a large sign, 6 x 3 feet, as far as I can establish, and the fact that the sign does not include the company name suggests to me that it was self evident, ie affixed to the actual building. Ive had my moneys worth of enjoyment out of investigating this sign, its not one for my personal collection but might be seen as important by a Shelveys fan. £30 if anyone interested.
