all the action is over at Vintage Signs and Advertising Collectibles on facebook at the moment, it's really grown over the covid period.
The admin staff are very active and the site has a great vibe about it. Although this was my first love, it's hanging on by its fingernails.
People by nature want an instant fix ..... sometimes it takes days to even get an answer to your post on here, most times, nothing, sometimes an earfull!
You have to have a tough skin to be an active member on here, it's like a stranger walking in to a pub in scotland, but thats part of the charm i suppose.
i pop in every week are so just to see anything interesting been posted and post up every now and again, but it's on life support and i'm not sure we can revive the patient.

I must be missing something ? I have been having a look at the Facebook page, really just checking out photos, because the comments and banter are just boring.

Hey Spence, be very careful mate with FailBook.

One false post that may trigger a red-flag algorithm and the system will automatically restrict you or worse, ban you for life – and there isn’t a dam thing you can do about it. Remember FB is a politically correct site on steroids and it’s controlled by an untouchable company outside of UK jurisdiction.

This site on the other hand should be protected and appreciated as I love the fact that we can all speak our minds – obviously within reason, without the FB police checking everything. It’s more like a good banter and p**s take down the pub, which is a rare thing now a days.

Untouchable company alright, just like Apple. A couple of weeks ago I bought my wife an Ipad for her Birthday. She hadn't used her Itunes account for years, since her last ipad packed up. She set up the new one with the fingerprint ID. It worked fine for about three days, then decided that they wanted her itunes password instead ? As she couldn't remember it, found out that resetting a password isn't as easy as it is everywhere else. Ended up getting locked out of the ipad and informed that the password could be reset on the 31/5/21 WTF !
Didn't the Gestapo loose the war ?

Can anyone here tell me what the deal is with ebay.co.uk as far as listings with Doesn't ship to the U.S.A. ???

Seems to be a default setting or something?

In the past I've been able to contact sellers who didn't list international shipping and negotiate a deal if they were willing, but with this new setting it will not allow a deal to
happen under any circumstance it seems.

Recently had a tribulation when attempting to get a cool rev counter (rare color) for cheap.as.chips and the seller was very willing to do the deal but the ebay formatting apparently prevented it and that was that, fuckall for naught.

The whole failed affair really got my goat and it grinds my gears how something simple is made into such a complex clustermuck.

The seller may have been clumsy with settings, but still it shouldn't be so crap to navigate parameter.

On other note, yes I absolutely love the first generation BMW MINI, so you old geezers can give me lashings if you like for me being a heretic!

Well I'm afraid you are missing out big-time by not being in the FB groups, brilliant posts every day & often lots to trade & buy. This forum has become a dinosaur, with no upgrades & a nightmare to use.

Philifumo. You have to edit listing, then way down near bottom, click the box for international shipping, otherwise it will only have domestic. Normally the international let's you buy but you have to contact for postage

Thanks for the explanation Mick, guess the seller couldn't figure it out which is a pisser on my end --- I've noticed though that the No US shipping thing in red seems more common now for some ungodly reason.

:

As for the previous comment about missing out by not being on FB groups, while it is true that there's much activity and cool pictures, it can be a nightmare to navigate and as an archive it is utterly useless because it is so fuggin' difficult to find previous posts in specific. I have long despised FB and refused to join due to ethical concern because of the nefarious manner in which they operate, plus I detested their "walled garden" approach where you couldn't see much unless you joined --- that tactic is a carrot dangle to make you join so they can have access to your precious data which generates revenue for them, buncha barstards in my book but after years and years of resistance I finally joined because that's where all the action is nowadays in the aspect of classifieds, Ebay seems to be on the downslope here (FB Marketplace is the more popular  bargain fleamarket it seems) and Craigslist (similar to Gumtree) started charging $5 for car listings so they lost lots of traffic...

...most of the conversation I've read on FB is idiotic surface-level tit tat, and even worse there is rampant misinformation that goes uncorrected, and to add insult to injury, written language isn't even the preferred method of communication in many cases as most morons there love to talk with memes or gifs or thumbsup what-have-you icons or like buttons.

This forum may be a dinosaur, but it is an incredibly rich archive which is easy to search and is intensely deep with credible knowledge, unlike FB where say perhaps I wanted to try and find something out about Carroll's Mick McQuaid even if I did find a few pics they likely wouldn't even have a caption for info.

The same thing has happened in the old telecoms collecting circle. In the past email banter between members was many people with rich conversation and full of interest. Then came along a younger member singing the virtues of FailBook and before you knew it, the email group had all but vanished. The really annoying thing is that the moderator of this telecoms FB site (the same younger member) has insisted that any joining member MUST use their full and real details – no aliases. A bit naive and overly trusting in FB, I feel, but then the young are.

Just wait until George Orwell’s vision comes to life in 5 years time. Those of us of a more senior disposition can see the danger signs coming, but the young and naïve just think it’s cool – like the cashless society. Talk about sleep walking into a nightmare…

At least print media seems still strong in the UK, at least for the time being, or at least seems so in my eyes comparatively speaking because over here in the US traditional print media is all but dead and gone for the most part.

I buy several UK magazines on a regular basis, automotive titles that wouldn't have much of a chance surviving over here, especially something enthusiast focused to a specific niche like Fast Fords or Performance MINI.

Speaking of telecom stuff, one of the UK magazines I regularly buy is Thoroughbred & Classic Cars - they once ran a nice article about a father and son team who had meticulously restored an old Morris telephone van, complete with all the specialist tools in working order, it was neat to see and read and I could relate because my dad was a phoneman for Southern Bell and I had ridden with him a few times in the company Chevy van.

Facebook + all the other various social media has seemingly gutted the print media over here, but at least y'all still seem to be hanging on in that department, unless of course that I am mistaken? What say you? How is the health of print media over there?

I'm an old git who loves having a big library of paper printed magazines (and books too! LOL) but this new generation seems all okay with digital content even though it is ephemerally fleeting which can suddenly disappear without notice when a site goes down.
