Generally, being brought up with English signs I prefer them over any from other countries...............but I don't understand your logic Hinks.

Why does it matter if its a metal sign or a poster ? If you saw it from a distance straight on you might not know what it was, So you might say " Wow thats a lovely thing !! walking up close you see its in fact a sign ? so then you say I don't like that cos its not a poster ?? "

...and I actually think its a great sign ...BUT the price was way beyond ridiculous !!

Signs and posters in my opinion have fundamentally different design qualities. I admit my logic is possibly skewed but all I know is that this is too flashy and sophisticated to be appealing to me. I’m not denying it’s a great image and well composed and laid out. But as an enamel sign it stinks.

I agree with you Hinks, it seems like a poster design. But let's face it, most continental signs look like posters to us.

I’m glad you get my drift Fleece. It’s the simplicity and oddness of old enamel signs that appeals to me the most. This sign is too sophisticated. You might as well start collecting Cubist sculptures or Abstract Expressionism if you’re going to get into this sort of sign.

I think this says it all: "This sign is too sophisticated".

I think Continental signs are too sophisticated for you British lads. :-)

Had a talk about that with some collector friends from Norway and Germany recently and we concluded that you guys like your traditions and the funny idea that everything should not be changed. You still like to be alone on an island. You still like to drive on the left and, if possible, making a fire starts with rubbing to sticks together. But it is hopefull that you have started to use a computer, so there is hope for the future. LOL.

And if you think prices are crazy, just check out the results from the last auction by Dan Morphy from the USA. E.g. an oil tin for more then 4000

I can never work out with you Langcat if you are wilfully misunderstanding me as some kind of wind up; or if you are genuinely incapable of understanding the subtlety of my argument. I think it’s best if you stick to gathering up your wonderfully over designed bits of high art masquerading as adverts; and I’ll sit in my hovel chewing a piece of straw, surrounded by my funny little English signs (which presumably were all made by half witted racists).

Last I heard Spence had converted to Islam and was studying the Koran in order to expand his cultural horizons.

My I ask what your contribution is to the world of collecting? Please show me some of your treasures so I can apologise for my behaviour??

Dear Henk - I feel we are friends even though we’ve never met.

I’d love to show you what I’ve collected (although I don’t consider myself to have anything to do with the ‘world of collecting’ as you put it).

But I’ve never been able to upload images on here. No doubt this is a symptom of my parochial English incompetence.
