I’m sorry you don’t feel we are friends Henk or I suppose I must address you as Langcat 😢.
There is a thread here somewhere from about a year ago kindly posted by Lummox. It’s called A few signs from Hinkslamps or something like that. I’ll try to find it. All the signs there have so much more character and superior enamelling techniques to any continental sign I’ve ever seen.

Dear Hinky,

You can call me Henk, Langcat, annoying bastard or whatever. I don't mind. I am not here to make enemies or friends. I was just trying to open up the minds of the UK collectors to see the beautty of other signs then British.

And I dont care what signs you have, expensive, good, bad, cheap. As long as you are happy with them, its ok. But dont tell me Continental signs are rubbish or British signs are superior. It just depends what you're taste is.

And I like them all.

And yes, I do like to be sarcastic sometimes, just to stir things up. I think I have succeeded ;-)

PS You're signs are horrible

That is a lot of money for a sign to be sure, but shipping has always had a very strong following and the condition combined with a good period image does give it superstar quality.

Here in the UK we are obsessed with the Edwardian and Victorian era of sign collecting unless you go into the transport category and then everyone's tastes suddenly change.

We have been lucky as collectors here in teh UK as you can pick up some amazing signs at relatively no money at all compared to the 'art' world and many other areas of investment/collecting.

We have always been able to pick up a good Wincarnis, Phillips Tea lady, Halls Distemper sign for what some people would spend on a fishing rod or an average push bike.

Having being round the block a few times, you get an idea of how rare some signs are too. Sometimes you may only be offered a version of a sign once and there are a lot of people reaching the end of their lives with spare money and horrible children who would rather have an example and pay well for it than having a gap on the wall.

To conclude, signs/art are still relatively cheap, get them while you can as they are rarer than you think. Just because you see lots of photos of them, or saw loads in the past, doesn't mean you can pick up a good example tomorrow for a song.

You make some valid points Al, but it still doesn't change the fact in my eyes, that the price is still LOOPY !

If you took value out of it, I would rather have my Huddart Parker on the wall to look at, I would rather have a Holzapfels composition on the wall to look at, I would rather have the dry dock scene on my wall to look at, all shipping signs, which I and most others would find more appealing.

For once I have to side with our European bretheren ..............and I think most are missing the point & OMO its so simple

If you were born and bred in the UK or a similar " British " laening country (ie) Canada , Australia obviously MOST will prefer British Signs...its what you were brought up with, its what you are used to ....mainly you prefer tea and or beer etc etc

If you were born on the continent you will prefer Eurpean Signs ...... Coffee & wine etc etc it makes absolute sense

...........................or perhaps it does'nt LOL

Ross, there is nothing wrong with the sign, although not my taste............ it's just the price Ross.

I agree Henk has been raised with that style of sign. When I look at continental signs, I can't tell whether they are from the 20's, or the 60's, the style looks very similar. Seems to me that with British signs, there is an evolution of styles through time........ sounding way to deep and arty now.... STOP THAT ! SILLY PERSON !

There's nothing wrong with saying the sign is over-priced , because in my humble opinion it very much is .But if someone is willing to pay it then that's their perogative . I think most people would view the selling price as 10 times what you would be expecting to pay . A triumph of hype over substance . But it's all subjective, there's nothing rational about it .Been better to have bought a Ferrari with the money , might have had some change left over .

I'd say more like 100 X real value. If I saw that is a store, I woudln't even consider it, even if for $500 (or whatever the "L" pound symbol is, my keyboard isn;t setup)

But still, this goes to show the incredible divide of the ultra rich as compared to the masses. Some people work thier entire lives to try and save even a portion of that amount, then some ultra rich can spend it in 30 secons and not even think about it. Ross and Spence might have htis kind of money, but not everybody !!

Still I wish you good luck with increasing your pile of over designed Art Deco monstrosities.

 Hi Hinks . Henk's remark was made "tongue-in-cheek" , i'm pretty sure he doesn't think your signs are "horrible" . Just a gentle wind-up , that's all .
