Hi .. Bought this 4 years ago for £50 but not found any information on date or reason to call it "Carriage"    any help welcome

 Looking for a hidden meaning rather than the obvious..Does thie carriage image imply that you had to be "posh" and wealthy to buy these cigarettes ?..did they cost a lot more than "Joe Bloggs" packet of Wills Woodbines..?..The size indicates they would be on show for guests to pick one and light with their gold Rolex lighter !!! There again , better less brash dispensers were available

Yes the carriage was the split leaf. They used to cut lengthwise down the center, and market them for the weathier conuiseer. The whole leaf were sometimes sold and were referred to as stagecoaches, but primarily the tobacco was cut sold as carriages

We did do a piece on ths brand a few years back but unable to find it in the archives, It is recorded as first introduced in 1900 by the firm Godfrey Philips Ltd who were founded in 1844 at 112, Commercila St, and 6, Little Pearl St, E. This company between 1900 and 1910, were affiliated to at least 20 UK companies manufacturing abroad and a factory in New Zealand. The brand name implies to me that it was manufactured for the upper-classes and sold in packets with a Bamboo Mouthpiece. Your counter-tin looks in very good condition
