I recently purchsed this tin which prompted me to look into the Salmon & Gluckstein company. The Gluckstein Bros started the tobacco manufacturing as early as 1850 in the East End of London. In 1863 Barnett Salmon married one of the Glucksteins daughters and eventually became a full partner, changing the name to Salmon & Glucksrein's. In 1899 the firm had 120 shops and a tobacco factory in Dingley Road. In 1902 the firm joined the ITC. In 1903 one of the Gluckstein's grandsons and an Albert Levy formed the Ardath Tobacco Co, but in 1912 was taken over by the ITC. In 1953 the company amaIgamated with A & I Jones and the Bewlay Shops came into being.
This "Life Boat" tin is in very good condition and has a different colour background to the more common blue one shown. Does anyone have other samples of this tin to show???????
