I think the most likely explanation is that the first second and third boys have become slightly less distinct than the fourth and fifth boys because the fourth and fifth boys are more distinct; and this is due to various processes. Hope that clears things up. |

To me, whats more worrying is the new damage. If you look closely at the damage to the letters R & Y in FRY'S it looks fresh, especially round the edges. Also the last boy, there's a lot of stress cracking, which makes me think that a lot more enamels going to be falling out! |

Most of these signs have had 'second lives' after being taken down, where they can be subject to all sorts of uneven wear, whether it be as a panel on a shed wall, a shelf, or a top to a water tank! |

I've always understood that the reason for 5 Boys signs and Rowntrees Factory signs to be susceptible to fading, is due to the monochrome image originally applied being done by a different process to the main colours. They are more affected by sunlight and are not so tolerant of any form of abrasion. You rarely see a faded coloured 5 Boys. Have posted an image of each ,both somewhat faded. However, they weren't expensive, the 5 Boys costing 100 pound ,and the Rowntrees 80 pounds in the early nineties.

Are the monochrome images more like transfers on top of the enamel? |

Amazing that you could pick signs like that up for so little in the 90s. Is that the bottom of a Strange's Crystal Oil sign in the 2nd picture? My favourite sign! |
