You must of all seen it go through or at least heard of this certain enamel sign selling at auction..(BBR)?? I must admit..The sign was pure class..Great condition, great size and a great subject...I find it strange that no one else as give it a mention on here,so i thought I would..Perhaps its had a mention else where? Well done to the knew owner of it..A sign that is well worth hanging in any collection as it really is a Cracker of a sign..Anyway enuff harping on about the sign,i will get straight to the point as to why i give it a mention on here..."The price of it"!! £14 Grand..i am really really shocked to be honest..Gob smacked..At a geuss i would of said £8k at a push..Perhaps im out of touch now with prices on Good enamels??

About 2 year ago on here some one asked if prices on Enamels would ever drop? Well heres proof that that aint going to happen anytime soon..During covid enamel prices went mad due to one thing or another..Ive never known signs drop in price over the years. They have been level at times but unlike many antiques Never as the arse fell out of them even with v.good reproz flying about..The enamel game now price wise is out of my reach..Its now a rich mans game..

GREENVILLE, S.C. – On August 27, Richmond Auctions set a new world auction record for the most expensive antique advertising sign when it sold a 48in double-sided porcelain Musgo Gasoline sign for $1.5 million against an estimate of $100,000-$750,000, shattering the previous record of $400,000.Sept 2, 2022

That Musgo went to an art collector.

Lots of covid money still sloshing about, combined with the rich having extra cash (from Government covid money and nothing open for 2 years to spend their expendable cash on), combined with increasing speculators getting in on the act, combined with limited supply and you have a
market only going one way. Look at the Euro market and the gas and oil market for enamels in the states. I personally think enamels here in the UK are going to be a great investment.

Just looking at a few recent petroliana auctions, i'm only seeing the bigger prices on mint enamels, the below par stuff is either unsold or average price. Quality always sells and the new buyers in the game are picky (as they are investing not collecting)

Unfortunately, like most things in life ... once the words out, genuine enthusiasts can't compete and that's finally happening to our hobby.

Lucky i'm loaded :) .... that's a joke

This has always been an expensive sought after sign! When I first started collecting in the mid 70's it was the one everybody wanted even then. By the late 70's, early 80's along with the Zebra, the Cocoa Beans was the one to aspire to! I paid £35 for my Zebra and £50 for a very good Five Boys - the Cocoa Beans was £65!!! all bought from Chris Gordon. This was big money then and for several days after holding my breath and buying them I found it hard to sleep at night through worry I had done the wrong thing!! At the time in contrast, a really mint Cigarette packet was £15 or less depending on brand. Unfortunately later, both my Five Boys and Cocoa beans went in swaps for mirrors and a Wincarnis respectively. It took me years to buy them again, at prices which seemed huge at the time but now look like a snip!

I don't disagree with Mark , but it seems a huge amount of money to me . But it's a different  game now , there's some big hitters out there who will stump up the money if they want something badly enough . Trouble is it moves it up to the next level and then most of us get left behind because we can no longer compete .

This has just been posted on a leading US Facebook group, it’s about a big oil and gas trader sale held 3 times a year:

Just left the Dixie gas show. I am going to be brutally honest. It was disappointing. Not the stuff for sale, there was a lot of great stuff. It’s the insane prices. I’m not a sign trader or a super avid collector. I’m just a guy who likes old stuff and old signage. This hobby isn’t for me. it has become the old car hobby. Money is king. Buying and flipping. Was looking for a decent screen door push plate. Turned the tag over… 350.00. Rusty, beat up common signs were hundreds. As I said it has become the old car hobby. There is very little room for a regular guy. Not really an entry level at all. It will end up being a bunch of rich guys swapping cash and signs. Bringing stuff to shows to show off and putting ridiculously high prices on it, trying to set a new market price. Sorry if my honest opinion makes people mad or hurts feelings. I mean who besides a rich guy can justify spending 4k for a Texaco sign? I’m not poor by any stretch, just doesn’t seem logical to me.
