Hi, I bought this sign and was wondering what is the best way to try restore it. The sign is 32 x 32 inch and 3/4 inch thick slate and very heavy. should the slate be painted, and has anyone got a picture of the trade mark for colours. I have seen other slate signs which have glass on the front would this have been the same or is it too big. And has anyone got any idea as to the age of the sign. Any info would be very welcome.  Thanks

Hi There

You need to cut a piece of quarter inch plate glass the exact shape of the sign. Stencil the graphics and paint the back of the glass black and remove stencil to show the carved stone graphics underneath. The lettering needs to be done in gold leaf stuck down with gelatine (?). I think the triangle needs to be red. maybe a black border. Best check on that one.

the glass is usually held in place with bent metal tabs screwed into the side of the slate.

Hi Al,

Thanks for the advice on the sign. The only problem is the sign already weighs 38 kg without the glass. I don't think my walls could take the weight. Still looking for pictures of the triangles if anyone can help.
Thanks Andy
