Sadly Mick, its not mine, but I wish it was. I've only ever seen one in the flesh so to speak and that was years ago.
So not sure of the size, but I guess its got to be at least 5 foot tall?

Hi Phoneguy, don’t know if it’s the right size but the top of a Milkmaid sign has just appeared on eBay
Item number 224166816462

Wow, what are the chances, although they want 10 X the fair price.

Yea just noticed this.

As you say what are the odds of that! Spooky or what.

I was going to ask if this is being sold by anyone here on the forum?

It is exactly what I need (32" wide), but the price is mega lofty for just ¼ of the sign. Maybe beggars can’t be choosers on this one.

I guess you have to weigh up the costs of restoring – adding in old metal and repainting the lettering compared to simply cutting and joining together with a bit of cosmetic repair?

What do you guys think as the sign itself is probably quite worthless to someone wanting a complete sign?

I've told you before , Phone Guy , save yourself the hassle , and just buy a better example . That's 50 quids-worth that top off the sign , but he's a dealer and he thinks he's got the crown jewels , so it's a waste of your time . Even if you can have it married together , it might still end up looking like a dog's breakfast .

Absolute bargain BUY IT , ..................once you have cut your top bit off this 1/3rd of a sign and welded it to the top of yours, you could sell the middle bit to a Top and Bottom sign collector.

Its a win win situation

I understand exactly what you’re saying - throwing good money after bad.

But it’s sooo tempting.

If it was a £100 BIN, it would be worth the punt, but £400 BIN! I really can’t justify that. And as you say ‘dealers’ what top dollar, so any Make Offer way below their BIN will probably just offend them.

I know Spence, the joining of 2 signs is most likely going to end in disapointment or a monster!

I think I just need to stand down and let it go...

But, then again.....Ahhhhh

You're absolutely right there, BB!

I think you'd find things didn't quite line up, and the shades of white and blue were different! It could just be an absolute mess, and be far more work than you'd imagine! (I suppose if someone were to let you take it away, and see how it might fit, that might de-risk it a bit at least, but that probably won't happen here!)

I kind of think it would be fun to try it out. You would need a steady hand, but you could use the bottom of the "Milkmaid" font to measure against as it is really quote a straight feature. If a guy had access to a milling machine with a table and "x" axis stroke at least as long as the width of the sign, you could dial it in and do a deadly straight cut.

I would rough cut it first by hand, then use a 2 flute carbide end mill to clean up along the entire length. The glass frit would dull the end mill quickly, but only along the one area of cutter, and it would likely just turn to dust as you cut along. Of course the risk is there that it would chip, but I don’t think so, as long as you set the feed at .001/.002 chip per tooth and kept the SFM down.

A quick deburr with a carbide burr and you would be good to go. Then off to the back side for some light spot welds (Careful not to overheat)  do in small increments and let cool in between tacks.

Wow, I couldn’t even begin to entertain that process myself, let alone know of anyone personally in the UK who could do it. Ay yi yi…

Ross, You old oracle of reason, sometimes you have to be quite blunt to help people understand. Thanks mate.
