I'm sure I have seen similar but must be a rare bit.

I know what you are saying, the type face with 'and' looks all wrong.

I was asked about a larger one a few months back and I poo pooed it though. I then ended up with the same sign in a bulk deal and it was right! h i am still kicking myself about that one. these late signs are so easy to forge.

Don't all the genuine Spratts' signs from this era have the design nos. in the bottom corners?

I'm afraid this auction house is no stranger to repro enamel signs, remember the Price's candles 'fingerplate' a few years back to name but one? They should know better but obviously turn a blind eye.

I think you are right Steve. Most of the postwar ones I have seen do.

here's one I have just uploaded to the shop with a few other signs. More to come later today (plug over)

Response from GWRA.
GWRA have a zero tolerance policy on reproductions and resent this uneducated comment by Steve the Tyke "I'm afraid this auction house is no stranger to repro enamel signs, remember the Price's candles 'fingerplate' a few years back to name but one? They should know better but obviously turn a blind eye"
I believe that the sign to which he refers was withdrawn as is normal if we miss something. We do not 'turn a blind eye' to anything flagged, in fact far from it, we pride ourselves in listening to other collectors/experts and I personally abhor repros on any type and those of you who now me well will know of my crusade against Fake Railway clocks , Road signs (STEVE what were you up to at Quorn!) and Shedplates. We certainly will withdraw any item before the sale if it is proved to be reproduction.
As far as the Spratts fingerplate goes it's a 100% right and comes from a hoard of Spratts signs that were found by and eminent published enamel sign collector who is not particularly happy with this silly statement, the sign when it arrived to us still had its original greaseproof wrapping and was pretty 'shop soiled' .

Simon, I am sure that you would agree Steve is entitled to his opinions and you should know he is a respected and known collector of enamels. The piece shown does indeed look a little iffy but as we all know in this game provinence is always great. And I am also sure that eminent published enamel sign collector would not mind his name being published and most of us out here are thick skinned enough to take a little criticism or indeed a question over a piece, I expect there isnt a person on this site who hasnt been caught out by clever repros at some stage! Also this site is very rich in experienced collectors and dealers all of who's opinion is welcome on an open forum. We are all here to help each other including auction houses, dealers and shops. This stops the repro pieces getting out into the open market where less suspecting buyers with deeper pockets will get stung. Jez.

Hi Jez
I totally agree with you as far as ensuring that we must ensure Repros are not sold , but I'm afraid some dealers dont help themselves by selling repros not marked as such especially Roadsigns etc, I'm sure Steve will know what I'm on about !

We will withdarw any item which turns out to be wrong, that has allways been our policy and will remain so.

Take Care

Regards Simon

I've had dealings with Simon privately and for myself, can vouch for his honesty and integrity.
