That the price of Fry's cocoa had changed! Usual text at the bottom covered in black enamel.

I've seen several Fry's signs Cocoa with the prices enamelled over like this. (There's a version of the small circular one where you can see the impression of the price!) Perhaps a post-productiopn/pre-issue price rise caused it!

Didn't they do it during the second world war as part of the blackout?

Dont know how true it is,,but i once asked a top collecter why this happend and was told that it was something to do with the cost of the enamel paint and that the  blue was alot cheaper?? Cracking sign by the way.

Hi Lummox,

I'm interested to know what the new price was! Four pence three farthings? Or five pence maybe?!!

Can't see the 'black out' idea working really, as the tin that is left is a bright pale yellow! Surely they weren't as late as 1939, in iron too! Price change seems the most likely option to me.

Not sure about the cost of black enamel against blue either!

As the signs have been clearly enamelled with one colour and price, then over-enamelled with black, I'm sure it must be to do with a price change. Perhaps black enamel is more opaque than blue, to hide the white lettering beneath?

I'm just going out now........where's my anorak?

I'm with Lummo on this one.

This sign was originally issued in Northern Ireland. Is now on fleabay as I don't know how to price it. Saw similar at Beaulieu for £1,400 but didn't see it sell.
