Hi.Has anyone ever seen this type of opener in the flesh?.I found a pic of one on the first Codd Patent in an advert-the Codd would date to the early 1870`s.Any info would be appreciated.

I'm guessing this device pushes a glass ball/stopper into the bottle, so gaining access to the content.
If so, how do they get the stopper into the bottle and secured at the top in the first place?

Hi Hilbert,

It's pretty ingenious really! The marble is warmed and dropped into the neck chamber, before the lip was formed and tooled from another blob of molten glass, leaving an opening at the mouth, smaller than the diameter of the marble! The lip was also formed with a groove on the inside, to receive a rubber washer which made a seal with the marble. Damned clever those Victorian inventors!
