Is this not cut down from a larger sign. The border seems odd & the lack of large size text makes me think it might be? What does anyone else think?

I think your right Pete, not sure what's been cut off?? I think the border top and bottom has been trimmed, not sure whether there was more text. Stange and Co. is written all over the buildings.

It's still 53 x 33 inches, so I don't know how big it was in the first place.

Just for the record, the Stange & Co. sign is from Christchurch New Zealand.  It was a big thing that came in three pieces so the central pictorial part is a complete sign in itself, not cut down.  The two other pieces were placed either above and below the pictorial part, or both beneath it - it seems they were exclusively used on railway stations around New Zealand probably because the company did a lot of mail order business  (we know all this from old postcards of railway stations which show the  sign(s) in place.  The wording on the two parts are 1) 'Strange & Co's Great (in a ribbon:) Drapery and Home Furnishings' and 2) 'Establishment Christchurch'.

I have a nearly mint example of the pictorial part but in 35+ years of collecting have never seen or heard of either of the other bits although am hopeful that one day, one or both will turn up.  I've often passed the building over the years (until the earthquake the ground floor housed a cafe).  I've seen a photo of it still standing but it's in the red zone and whether it stays that way remains to be seen (unless it's already been demolished).  We know from postcards that, like everywhere there were a lot of interesting signs here prior to WW1 that are no longer known to exist although even in the last decade or two several have come to light that we thought' we'd never see again.

G'day Howard,

Thanks so much for the info, I knew there had to be more to it. It had to be missing the name of the company somewhere, I was tempted to get a stick on stencil made in fancy writing and stick it in the left hand corner on a 45 degree angle. I know there's plenty of you out there saying "Just leave it alone", but I reckon it would look good??

Isn't it a great sign to look at Howard?? The detail is magnificent.

Cheers Gordo
