Hello All- over the last 5 months i have been subject to some mental anguish which is driving me insane. About 5 months ago i woke up blind in my left eye.As you can imagine this was a big shock. The diagnosis was permanent loss of sight after a blood clot killed all the cells in my optic nerve. I have battled my way back for now but i am quickly losing the once driving passion for sign collecting, having only bought 1 sign in the last 5 months.

I have to seriously consider whether to keep or sell my signs. I have until 30th March ( the NSW motoring museum are visiting my collection) once they have been i will need to make a big decision.Ill keep you all informed as i will offer all members first choice--David

Hi David sorry to hear abt the problems your going through at the moment, something like thats bound to change your what you want from life.personally some signs mean more to me than others and id never sell them, but others for whatever reason dont have the same sentimental value, basically im saying dont sell anything that u might regret selling later, some of yr signs must be irreplacable.hope things work out for you

Hi David, it must have been a massive shock and life changing trauma overnight.      My brother is battling cancer and he too suffered a stroke which did the same as you.   After the initial  realism which he thought that everything was ending sooner than he thought it would , he didnt make rash life changing decisions, and says now he's glad he didnt, which put his life into perspective.       If you have your signs as your passion in life, you have to comes to terms what your life would be without them, that is, once theyve gone, would you have long term regrets?       You say it was 5 months back, so obviously youve gone through some time to ponder, but these things do need time , if you need the dosh fair enough,if not, this could be a life changing decision with more consequence than you think. As my brother said," I've got another buggering eye, if I lose that, then the decision is easier".   Needless to say, I'm sure everyone on this forum understands your feelings, and wishes you all the very best.   Thinking of you, and hope things adapt and improve, all the best Rich

It's not the same because it wasn't through having any serious illness, but Cook Snr wishes he never sold his ciggy/baccy tin collection. He could never realistically have a collection like it again now. I suspect the same applies to your signs. While you got one working eye, I'd keep them. Two-penneth duly supplied.

Hard to believe a hardcore collector like you David would ever give it away, but if it don't drive you anymore??

 Hi David ,

Really sorry to hear your bad news ..
I had a health scare a few years back and it certainly changes your priorities .
I am still working towards disposing of my collection . A daunting task...

In retrospect , I'm glad I did not sell it off back then and taking the decision to catalogue it and prepare it ( slowly  ) for sale , is one I have not regretted .

A shake up like that puts things in perspective , and  somewhat diminishes the desire to acquire more and the appreciation of  what you have created  .

I have had two good friends make the decision over the years to sell up completely. Both hard core long time collectors . Interesting that both of them confided that apart from some expected anxiety , it was in fact a relief to move on .
I would take as much time as possible if I were you .. Such a large part of your life for so long.

All the best and wishing you the best possible outcome ..

Relics

Hello all.thanks for all the comments its much appreciated at this time.I have been weighing up a few options over the last few months.I have over 300 signs and most are very good ones.
I think as you collect longer you want the best its just part of being a greedy hunter.I am coming to terms with letting go of many of my earlier signs as i have enjoyed some for 20 years or more.I must admit that im not much of a seller so even asking a price for them will make me anxious.I appreciate the comment from relics that even long time collectors feel relieved and can move on.
I will start selling some signs from the monday2nd of April. If you are interested in any now please send me an email and we can negotiate a price and i will save them for you.You can probably see a lot of my collection on the home page at www.advertisingantiques.co.uk and look at the members pics and also browse the photo gallery. The GBP is very very week against the aust$ so it may go against the English members......I will probably keep most of the motoring ones for the future
I will post some pics in the for sale section also after that date--thanks again--David

David,
I am really sorry to hear your story and hope that you still retain some love for collecting. Unless that has happened to any of the rest of us on the forum it would be difficult to understand just what you're going through and feeling. I can completely understand your reasons but you should keep some core pieces in your collection as i know at some stage in the future youll regret it. I sold all my advertising collection about 10 years ago and stopped collecting altogether purely for financial reasons. However about 3 years ago the bug returned and i started collecting again. This time I tried to specialise and have managed to secure some nice pieces but still will struggle to find or replace some of the great tins and signs I let go a decade ago.
But in the mean time all the best mate. My sympathies are with you.....Jez....

 Hello David,

I am sorry to see this message strand to find out that you have this problem and I think that the advice given by others is from the heart,  you are a key collector in Aus. If you do decide to make space for emotional or finacial reasons, sell the worse or least loved items first...and be sure to ask for myself or Alex's help to relocate them if the forum doesn't do it quickly for you.

Kindest Heartfelt Regards

Gary Dowell

hello all-i really need to say that i have been humbled by all the responses and advice- i have had a lot of emails from collectors that i have never even heard of before.Gathering all the feedback it seems the best way to go for me is to start selling from the bottom and work my way up until i can say stop here. This will hopefully allow me some financial breathing space and allow me to enjoy something else besides hunting those damn signs.thanks again--david

David, just got back form a few weeks away so pretty rushed right now and will respond to you in full when I get chance to digest this terrible news. I really hope things improve for you, is there anything that can be done at all?

How does this affect your work etc?

You will be able to list items for sale on the site this week if you want to try selling stuff on here first?

Best wishes

Al.
