Great story. I love the typography on these signs and until yesterday had seen neither of them. Then a blue and a green one.
When I was a kid in the early 80s, my Dad sort of collected tin signs as he called them - enamels that is.
Our local grocers shop closed in 1982 and my old man as a secondhand bookseller went to buy the owner's books from him.
There was a Rowntrees enamel in the window in a wooden frame, he got that along with two mint rowntrees signs from a back store for nothing.
I sold the signs about 15 years ago to Dave Huxtable, wish I still had them. That place was a goldmine, my Dad being a fair man got the owner to put all the showcards in the auction as the old fella that owned the place was going to ditch them all.
I still have the pics my Dad took and I still drool over them now. He only took pics of the signs that were framed and there were loads of other unframed ones and cut-outs that also went in the sale. If only my time machine would work!
I still have one Virol enamel from that shop that was found as a replacement roof tile.
Happy Days.
Lets have some more finders stories - a new thread?

I once went to a place in Cardiff and there were 200 Holdfast boot signs making up the floor of the place all facing upwards though!

I recall coming across an extremely large hay barn somewhere near Honiton which was virtually made of very large Motor BP spirit "union jack" signs...
