Hi there.  I've just managed to lay my hands on what appears to be a large enamel player's navy cut sign, that's been on a wall for years outside an old shop nearby here in Glasgow.  The shop is being refurbished and it was removed by the workmen.  However, it's covered in a couple of layers of very thick gloss paint and at least one layer of undercoat.  I've just had a go - on a smal test area - removing some of the paint with a heat gun.  If anyone can offer me any advice or information about how I should clean it up I"d be very gratetful...  e.g. is the heat gun safe to use on the whole thing, or should I be off to buy a can of nitromors?

I've included a photo of how it looks at the moment and a close-up of the area I've cleaned.

And this photo I managed to find onlein is what *I think* it should look like if I strip the paint from it.

Oh, and is this effort actually worthwhile?!

Many thanks,

Andrew.

Heat gun should be ok, or paint stripper / nitromors. Looks like it should come up fine

definately with the effort Andrew - always think the time invested in projects like this always reap rewards and sence of achievement - I picked up a news of the world sign a few years back covered in bitumen (5 foot long) , spend ages with a scaple of all things (dont use on this btw) and it came up a treat - good luck and post the end result for us to see - Ciggy.

Andrew,,if i had this sign as you have coverd in paint ide use white spirits and a stanley blade to remove the shit.. Nitromors sometimes takes the paint off the top but leaves the enamel underneath dull...Good luck with it anyway..Look forward to seeing end result..

Hi again

Thanks to everyone for their advice and tips.  After a few hours of the heat gun and some carful scraping, it's slowly coming back to life.  I can't  believe how satisfying a job this is!

I'd like to think I'd have it all cleaned up and the frame repainted by the end of the weekend...

And then I just need to decide what to do with it!  Cheers, Andrew.
