I did say to myself that I was not going to buy anymore showcards as I had no more space. However, I could not resist this Player's "Roll Call" showcard as I have only seen it once before at the "Player's" exhibition in Nottingham Castle.

"Roll Call" brand was introduced in 1911 and withdrawn in 1941. In circulation for 30years.This showcard is dated 1916. Always liked the military influence of these showcards. Some of these soldiers look very young.

Hi Richard & b.b,

Glad you like the showcards. This is another die-cut for the same brand and dated 1915/16. I have not seen this one before. If you look closely, it looks as though these two guys are being chased.

Hi Bacco I thought I recognised those two chaps! We moved house at the end of September and most of my stuff is in storage, I'm just sorting it out bit by bit. Interestingly the new house has a separate outbuilding which used to be an old tailor's shop dating back to about 1850 and I'm hoping to use it to display my stuff. I'm doing some alterations to the building to make it more secure and watertight and have taken photos of my progress so hopefully I'll be able to post them on here when I've done. Any suggestions on how to recreate an old shop would be gratefully received. Broadie

Hi Broadie,

I like your framed "Roll Call" showcard and what a great idea converting your ex-tailors shop to display you collection. From what I can remember you have quite an assortment

of collectibles which could be found in any good general provisions shop. My theme was Tobacco and geared my purchases fixtures/fittings towards a period Tobacconist Shop with original mahogany counter and shelving with small/large glazed cabinets which would maximise display of my collection. These items were in a sorry state when purchased and had to be refurbished at great cost & time. Fortunately I had a very good friend who was a retired joiner/shopfitter of the old school who was a tremendous help and I just kept him in beer for quite a few months.

Original shop fittings are now very expensive even if you can find them. You can achieve the same effect by staining new timber for counter and shelving. I have attached some photo's of period shops which may give you some ideas. Keep a photographic record as it will be nice to see it progressing. Any help I can give just ask.

That display of yours Bacco takes some beating..I would be quite happy to live in amongst that lot..Talking of old shops, have you ever been to Abba in North Wales?? Theres a fantastic baccy shop there, all original counters an fittings, mirrors tobacco jars all mixed in with todays stuff..Its well worth a look even though nothing is for sale in there..

Thanks for your comments b.b. I am not aware of this shop you mention and thought I knew North Wales quite well but not Abba. I know Aber Falls. What part of North Wales is this Abba??

If you do ever visit their Bacco dont be expecting a warm welcome,as the owner is a very moody cow.."Good luck"...
