Aloha Tobacciana Collectors,

I have an old Mitchell's Gold Medal Cigarette display case, I am having trouble researching the company. I am looking for any information about the case ie. history, date of production, rareity, or value. The case has drawers with painted glass windows and metal clam shell pulls, the drawers pull out from the side of the cabinet. Cut into the wood on the back of the case is the following:

THE PROPERTY OF THE

IMPERIAL TOBACCO COMPANY

{ of GREAT BRITAIN and IRELAND }

LIMITED

Any knowledge about this item you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time.

Hi can'tsmokitcollectit ,

Stephen Mitchell & Son were tobacco manufacturers founded in 1723 and based at 36, St Andrew Square, Glasgow. They became a branch of the Imperial Tobacco Company Ltd in 1901. Your cabinet was used for selling loose cigarettes by weight and some of  brands on your cabinet were first introduced in 1897. "Prize Crop" was one of their most popular brands.

The cabinets are quite popular with cigarette packet collectors and small tobacco tin collectors to display their collections. Yours looks in fairly good condition but is not as ornate as some such as Lambert & Butler.

Hope that helps.

Hi - I have one very similar but with slightly different names on the gold lettered strips. I bought mine a few years ago at Elsecar for £850, which I thought was a good price.

Yours is the only one I have seen recently - they are very rare now and very beautiful, I always think they look like an ornate temple to tobacco.

Although this is a great cabinet, in my mind the finest example of this type of point of sale advertising, is the wall mounted mahogany Ogdens cabinet with the side mirrors and mirrored pediment, which I know a couple of members of this forum own. I am still looking for one..........so if anyone has one for sale, please let me know at richardburn2003@aol.com

Aloha,

Thank you both for the good information. I recently purchased this at a local antique store here on the island of Oahu, Hawaii paid $150, seems like I made a good investment. Plan on displaying it in my Billiard Room/Man cave.  Interesting that this piece traveled all the way to this remote island chain in the middle of the Pacific. Exciting find! Thanks Again.

For those who have asked, I am not interested in selling at this time, but may be in the future. Feel free to contact me with questions or offers.

Sincerely,

cantsmokitcollectit
