Does anyone know if glass petrol pumps globes can be repaired by welding new glass or the broken parts, back to the globe.

I was thinking along the lines of welding steel where a filler rod is used. Would the glass need pre-heating like cast iron, or is it simply impossible to do?

I have a rare Dominion globe which was given to me for Christmas many years ago and it has the corner broken on 2 sides, I would like to get it repaired if possible, but I don't have the pieces as it was broken before I received it.

Tomorrow I intend to try some stain glass restoration people and also a glass blower to see what is said, however I wondered if this had ever been previously attempted.

Regards

Wayne

Hi Wayne, I will also be interested to hear how you get on with this project. I have never heard of glass being welded but you just never know sometimes, there are some clever people out there. I would be asking the people that restore china plates, cups and so on, I'm sure they could make some good suggestions.

I have done a repair on one of my glass globes, this globe had a good size hole in the top of it. As it is a rare globe in this part of the world I did not want to risk destroying it so I took a safe option. I made a patch mould for the outside of the globe and then I mixed up a clear resign product and poured this into the area where the glass was missing. Once set I removed the outer patch and cleaned it up a bit and then just put some paint over the damaged area. Not a perfect repair by any means but it has mended the hole and with the globe on a shelf you can not see the repair.

Regards

Allan.
